malapropism

Malapropism was my word-of-the-day weblog. I've long kept my trusty dictionary handy, but by December 2001 I found that I was needing to look up new words on a consistent basis in order to understand my reading assignments in college. Man, I had no vocabulary. Okay, truthfully, I still have no vocabulary. Anyway, I thought it might be interesting to start a new weblog in which I posted a new word which I had to look up that day in my dictionary. Sometimes the word came from a reading assignment, sometimes from television, sometimes from a movie.

All the definitions were taken verbatim from Webster's New World College Dictionary: Third Edition, which is the dictionary I've had since my freshman year of college and continue to use to this day. I made sure to reference the page from which I took the definition in case I (or someone else) wanted to look the word up again later.

It didn't take long for me to lose interest in the project. I think part of the problem is that I picked a horrible time to start the project. Because I started at the tail-end of fall semester, I was struggling to come up with words during winter break. Without the necessity to use the dictionary on a daily basis, I turned to picking random words out of the dictionary, which got really old really fast. I had been explaining with each word what made me include it, but once the words were all randomly chosen, it seemed stupid to actually write that every day. After only 21 days, I had completely lost interest and decided to abandon the project. I left open the possibility that I might resume one day, but I never did, and likely never will.
