16 Beers and Other Shit ::

Shit, I've been so busy lately that I haven't gotten a chance to tell everyone about how the last few days have gone. I don't have time now either, as I have to be to work shortly. I really will get back to you all shortly.

I'm a (Temporary) Working Man ::

I started a new job on Wednesday - a temp job - which I'm not wholely excited about, but at least it's work and it's money. Employment agency #2 called me Tuesday afternoon and asked if, even though it's not what I was looking for, I'd be interested in working as a temp in a small light industrial firm. Knowing full-well that I've had my limit with my father's and mother's constant nagging that I need to find employment, I agreed to take on the job. It's supposed to be about a two-week assignment for a company called IntelliCAM (short for Intelligent Computer Assisted Manufacturing) Custom Products. The bulk of their work is making custom signage for local customers. I worked Wednesday (and will need to finish Thursday) on a project making stainless steel ID tags for presumably a construction company. I spent the day cutting the steel, punching holes and rounding the edges, engraving ID numbers with a mill, and inking the numbers. It's boring, monotonous work, but at least it is work. If the employment agency finds the job I'm looking for in the mean time I'll leave the assignment early to start the job I'm really seeking. IntelliCAM seems like a nice enough place, and the people who work there are pretty cool, but it's obviously not what I'm looking for in a job. Anyway, at least I have something for the time being.

Outside of work my life is pretty boring lately. With everyone else either in school or differently occupied with work or other social engagements, I've been spending a lot of time at home. Thanks to the library I have been getting my fill of movies. I've also been observing as my mom disassembles Legoland. My room of Legos is being torn apart so my parents can use the space for other storage. It's a fair deal, as I never go in there anymore anyway, but it's another vestage of my childhood disappearing forever. It's not like we're getting rid of the Legos or anything; they're just being taken apart. At some point we'll have to clean them all (they're covered in dust and some sort of disgusting film) and then they'll be packed away until I move out and get a place of my own again.

I'm pretty hopped-up on caffeine right now from having sat at GW and sipped coffee for a few hours, but I need to drain it quickly so I can get to bed. I have to be to work at 8 and morning comes quickly these days you know. Nighty night.

All Quiet on the Job Hunt Front ::

I went to the job fair today like my dad wanted me to. It sucked, just like I thought it would. Basically, the different companies were set up in hotel rooms. People stood in line outside the rooms waiting to apply and be interviewed by these companies. It was all the same companies that were listed in the ad in the newspaper. I used the bathroom and left.

After returning home this afternoon I got a phone call from employment agency #2. She asked if I'd be interested, even though it's not what I applied for, in taking a 1-2 week temp job working some machine in a sign shop. Well, knowing that it would make my parents much happier if I was working, I accepted the offer. So, starting tomorrow morning I'm working at some company out in Greenville printing signs. Fun fun. It's most definitely not what I want, but if it'll get Mom and Dad off my case for a week or two I guess that's good enough. Boy, this moving home thing is one of the worst decisions I ever made.

Taco Tuesday ::

Not a whole lot went down last night. I watched All Quiet on the Western Front and then tried calling Corey (because he told me to call him after 8:30 on Monday), but he wasn't home, so I ended up watching Animal Crackers also before going to bed.

My plans for today are not yet well-defined. I just realized about a half-hour ago that I hadn't paid my car payment yet for this month (and it's due today), so I have to run over to the credit union and take care of that. There's some job fair going on at some hotel in town today - and of course my dad wants me to go there - but all the places listed are telemarketing firms, factories, or financial institutions - none of which I have any interest in. If my dad is so interested in these places, then he can go and get himself a job working for one of them, but no thanks for me.

Why Must I Be So Cursed? ::

Starting this Friday, the film society is screening I'm Trying to Break Your Heart (the Wilco doc) and the rereleased version of Lang's Metropolis! And here I am stuck in Appleton! If I only had the money, I could have made another weekend out of it, going to the last Twins home series of the season and seeing the two films. Grrrr....

More Non-News ::

I was watching "I Have a Secret" this afternoon on Oxygen and the first guest was JoEllen from the Houdini Historical Center here in Appleton! Her secret was that she had brought with her Houdini's straightjacket. Yep. After that I drove down to library to return some movies and check out some more. I picked up Charade, Animal Crackers, and Summertime. When I arrived the fire department was just leaving and people had apparently just reentered the building. A fire alarm went off falsely. Yeah, so that's all the excitement of my day.

A No-News Monday ::

Monday morning and I haven't heard anything yet from the employment agency. I'll have to give them a call soon and see what's new. In unrelated news, I made it through yesterday. Since I didn't get to bed until 4 Sunday morning, my parents let me sleep through church instead of making me go. We had to go to my aunt and uncles for lunch, where I was berated by my grandmother for missing church and bothered with stupid questions about the state of my employment search (if I don't have a job yet, then obviously the job search isn't going well... and NO, I'm not going to work as a greensperson or in a grocery store!). I left shortly after lunch to come home and take a nap. My parents stayed over there for the Packer game, so I knew I'd have to go back if I wanted dinner. I went back at halftime of the Packer game, and at least by then the bothersome relatives were gone and only the good one's were left. After the game I came home and watched the first 7 innings of the Twins game. Jesus - we cannot score runs right now! Anyway, Erik came and picked me up and we drove down to Oshkosh to go to Peabody's again. We stopped by Jeff's to see if he wanted to come, but he wasn't home. I think this might be the last time we go there for a while. It's the same crowd and the same lame jazz every week. We left there and came back to GW in Appleton. We sat there for a while and then he took me home. Yep, that was my Sunday - exciting, huh?

Weed Machine ::

Hey everyone-

I just got home. I went out on the town with Corey and Erik tonight. I first picked up Erik and then we picked up Corey. We drove downtown and parked my car behind Jekyll's. We walked on over to Jim's Place, where we spent the majority of the first part of the night, and had a few beers. I saw a couple people there I went to high school with, but they were mostly negligable. Erik knew of a party going on at some guy's apartment above some store on the Ave, so we went there next. It was pretty dead, but I seemed to know a lot of people there, so we stuck around talking for a while. Corey started getting tired, but I talked him into going for one more drink ay Jekyll's. I couldn't believe how many people I knew there! Squishy was working the door (as he apparently does every Saturday night). Zak was in there with some people and so were some people who were on our trivia team last year. Crystal was there - I had previously seen her at Jim's Place also - and she told me she works there on Friday nights. Trixie came in with some guy also, but they mostly kept to themselves. After finishing our drinks (sort of), I took Corey home, and then Erik and I went to Frank's, where we met up with some of the guys who had been at the party. After consuming pizza, I took Erik home and then drove around to see if anyone else was still and active. Nobody was. I then drove home and now here I am at 4 am. I'm still a little awake, but I guess I might as well go to bed, as I have nothing better to do. I think we need to do this a little more often on Saturday nights. I guess tonight (Sunday night) Erik and I are going to go down to Peabody's in Oshkosh again. Yeah. Oh, and you can ask Erik about the "Weed Machine" thing.

Saturday Edition ::

I'm back ladies and gents. My mom is out for the day shopping with my aunts and grandma, so it's just dad and I around the house today. I'm sort of biding my time right now. The Twins game is on WGN at 3, so I have to kill time until then. I was quite disappointed to find out this morning that they had lost last night, as last I heard they were up 1-0 and in a rain delay for the second night in a row. Other than the game I lack any sort of plans for today. I don't know who's around or what they're up to tonight. I really need to get out of the house and maybe even get drunk and spend the night at someone else's place so I can avoid having to go to church in the morning. Any time my grandma is in town it pretty much guarantees that we go to church that week. Ugh. So anyway, if anybody is reading this and has any ideas for me for tonight, let me know.

More Unrelated Stuff ::

I'm thinking I'm going to have to improvise when it comes to lighting for my tv show. Curious what some decent fresnel spots are going for these days, I decided to run a quick search on the internet and found them priced approximately in the $250 range. Hmmm... seems a little out my range. I might have to fashion something of my own using modified table and floor lamps.

Since I've tried calling every person who I know to be in town, and not a single person is available, I guess I'm going to have to make the most of the night by watching some of these movies I'm borrowing from the library. I guess it's just mostly disappointing because I'm actually feeling sociable tonight and it's all going to go to waste.

Homecoming on a Thursday? ::

That seems to be the case for the U this year, as the Twins postseason schedule could potentially cause problems with date and time of the homecoming football game against Northwestern. If the Twins were to be knocked out in the division series (which we certainly hope won't happen), the Dome would be open for the game as scheduled on October 12, but because Northwestern didn't want to have to wait to make travel plans, it was decided that in any event the game will be played on the 10th instead. On the one hand it seems like a nice bargaining chip for the U for a new stadium, but on the other hand, that helps the Vikings also, who definitely don't deserve a new stadium. I'm of the opinion though that the Gopher baseball team deserves a new stadium long before the football team. Even so, why can't the Gopher baseball team play at Midway Stadium? It's just as close if not closer to the St. Paul campus as the Metrodome is to the Minneapolis campus and I'm sure the Saints could be a lot more flexable in the scheduling than the Twins are.

What a Crappy Friday Night ::

I'm pretty bored. Everybody is either at work, out, or they just don't feel like doing anything tonight. Personally, I'm sick of sitting around the house and I want to get the hell out of here, but there's nothing for me to do. This town sucks.

What's Wrong? ::

Yahoo! News - German Minister Denies Hitler-Bush Comparison.

I don't understand why she'd need to deny making such a statement. I mean, any comparison between the methods employed by Bush and the methods employed by Hitler would be fairly accurate. I'll stop short of calling Bush a racist when it comes to the Arab world, but he's not far off on that respect either. Even more worrisome are comparisons possible between Bush and Saddam Hussein. Every charge levied against Hussein is a charge equally possible for levying against Bush. Bush says Hussein possess weapons for mass destruction. So does the U.S. Bush says Hussein trains terrorists. So does the U.S. Bush says Hussein is a threat to the rest of the world. The U.S. is a bigger threat to the rest of the world. Bush says Hussein oppresses the Iraqi people. Bush oppresses both the Iraqi and American people. How is it that so many Americans are so ignorant that they don't realize these truths and they think I and my ilk are the stupid one's? It's the religion. Christians are taught to blindly believe any stupid think told to them as if it were God's will. You know what people? The terrorists thought they were acting out God's will also. It's okay to be Christian and think for yourself on occassion. If even just some of you did that it would make a huge difference on why the rest of the world hates us so much.

Damn My Joblessness! ::

I went to a multitude of Twins game this season, watched almost all the others on tv, and was a faithful supporter throughout, but now that the big payoff is coming, I'm going to miss out on all of it. This sucks! The team returns home for their final homestand of the season starting Tuesday. They're going to have free food Tuesday morning outside the Dome, lower reserved tix for Tuesday's game for only $10, first 10,000 people get a team photo, and you get to see them reveal and display the new division championship banner. Next Friday night they're giving away Circle Berts cds. Saturday is fan appreciation day and they're giving away division championship pins and you can buy raffle tickets to win the players' jerseys. Yep, and I'm stuck here in Appleton.

10 Month Season? C'mon Now! ::

I can respect people for being hockey fans - that's fine - but what I don't understand is how they can get excited for NHL games 10 months a year. I couldn't help but notice that preseason hockey is getting its start already this weekend - the middle of September - and with the season, playoffs, and finally the Stanley Cup, it won't end until June - 10 months from now. Sure, hockey between November and April, that's just dandy, but hockey before November or after April is just ridiculous. It's too damn warm for snow or ice, which means it's too damn warm for hockey. I don't know... I guess I'll just never understand.

Blech. ::

Friday is here and the weather sucks. Yesterday it got extremely humid (especially for September) and then it just started raining. It started with scattered rain yesterday, but now it's turned into a full-on, steady rainfall. Almost a normal autumn rain if it weren't for the fact that it's still so damn humid outside. Man, do I hate humidity!

Not much to speak of from yesterday. Following the interview, the rest of the day was fairly uneventful. I went down to the library, returned the dvd's that I had watched, and I picked up 3 more: Horse Feathers, All Quiet on the Western Front, and Branded to Kill. My dad and I went to George Webb for dinner and then we went to watch my mom bowl (Thursday night is her league night). Then we came home and I dozed off down in the Red Room watching Horse Feathers. I found my way to bed somehow.

Today has been less than exciting as well. I must have gotten too much sleep last night because I woke up this morning rather groggy. I stumbled around the house and watched a bit of tv. This afternoon I'll probably read while waiting and hoping for a phone call about a job.

I got an email today from the secretary for the German department at the U. She said that Rick is up for promotion to full professorship and she wanted to know if I could write a letter attesting to his influence on me (or something along this lines). I wrote her back telling her I'd love to, as he was, of course, the biggest influence on me of anyone at the U. I'm waiting now for her to write me back and tell me exactly what she needs.

Talk About Rookies and September Call-Ups...! ::

How about the Twins beating lowly Detroit yesterday 2-0 with a line-up that included Mohr, Kielty, LeCroy, Cuddyer, Lamb, Valentin, Restovich, and Sears in addition to Rivas and Pierzynski (both only in their second full seasons) and Hocking (the hardened veteran)? On the other hand, the pitching staff was just the opposite, featuring Mays, Jackson, Guardado (who set the Twins single season saves record in the game with his 43rd), and the youngster Santana. It hurts to be without over half your starters, but if the young guys can win games, we'll take 'em!

The Big Update for Today ::

Since I know you've all been sitting anxiously by your computers all morning hanging by a thread and waiting to hear how my interview went, I suppose I should indulge your curious nature. I should think it went extremely well. After arriving at the office, they had me fill out tax forms and then they gave me the standard typing, Word, and Excel tests. I did quite well on all 3. Then the woman who runs the agency took me back in her office and she interviewed me. Afterward she relayed 3 potential jobs for me: one is doing mostly data entry and mailings for an insurance company in Neenah (not my ideal choice, but a job's a job), one is as an administrative assistant at a small company in Appleton doing a wide variety of jobs (fairly similar to what I was doing at the film society), and one is working as an adminstrative assistant at a slightly larger company in Neenah, but apparently they already had people interviewing for that job. Ideally, I prefer the small company in Appleton, but as I said, at this point a job is a job. She said she'd relay my resume and the like to the companies and get back to me either tomorrow or by Monday at the latest.

Overall, just from what I've encountered so far, I'm much happier with this second staffing agency than I was with the first. The first seems too large and too concerned with their own advertising and public image. This second one is much more personal and personable. I just hope it leads to something, although I'm pretty sure it will.

There, now you can go on with your lives.

Not So Good Al ::

I'm feeling slightly nauseated this morning, which isn't a good thing since I have an interview in 45 minutes. After going bowling with Matt and Carrie last night (I bowled a 156 and a 178) I stopped in GW. Squishy and Shane were sitting at the counter with a spot in between, so of course I had to take it. I first talked to Shane for about an hour about Europe (he was recently there again visiting his son, who is in Germany with Special Forces). Then when Shane left Squishy and I shot the shit for a few hours. It should be noted that I was downing a healthy dose of coffee this whole time. I finally left at 2 and made my way home. I then lay away in my bed until at least 3:30 wide awake thanks to all the caffeine. My alarm woke me up at 6 and here I am. This funky feeling could really backfire on me - hope not.

p.s. My mom made an On-Cor 2-pound, family-size entree last night. I don't have any idea how it could be enough for an entire family.

Okay, I'll Leave the House ::

For those of you who may have become concerned about my welfare having seen my steady posts and updates throughout the day, fear not for I am about to finally leave the house. Matt called me back and I believe he, Carrie, and I are going to go bowling this evening. Carrie thinks Sabre has buck bowling on Wednesday nights. Sure it doesn't compare with free Mondays at Southtown, but what does really?

Interesting.... ::

"[S]ome of the best scenes around here are in smaller towns. there's a little town called Appleton two hours from Milwaukee that will never get more than 400-500 people at an event but they are always the best parties."

I find this quote taken from the Drop Bass website most amusing because he refers to Appleton as "a little town," while he is from Marshfield! Marshfield is to Appleton as Appleton is to, say, New York City - it's shit, nothing, nada. How could some hick from Marshfield, no matter how long he's lived in Milwaukee, refer to Appleton as "a little town"?!

On a Positive Note.... ::

I filled out my application and borrowed the fax machine at my mom's place of employment to fax it back over to staffing agency #2 this afternoon. They later called me back and scheduled an appointment for tomorrow morning at 8. I have my fingers crossed that something may actually come of this one.

In completely unrelated news, I always have time for a good laugh when officials decide to shut down a rave. Here in Appleton Telulah Park has been shut down all day this coming Saturday in an attempt to prevent a party which the police believe was to be a rave. Apparently police in Sheboygan went "undercover" at a party last week and found flyers for the supposed rave in Appleton. Of course, either the flyers were for a party that was nothing more than a red herring or the organizers have to be the stupidest I've ever encountered. I'd love to confirm or deny the truth, but it seems that all of the sites with rave info are drying up and disappearing. Surely most of them are casualties of the national war on rave culture, but there has to be some sort of local-ish site left that will give me what I'm looking for. Uff-da.

Uggh - I'm starting to get a little frustrated here. I sent that email on over to staffing agency #2 yesterday and they still haven't gotten back to me. The Business of the Day ::

Let me begin today by wishing Tony a happy 23rd birthday. Happy birthday! Old man....

And now in other news, I'm not in a very good mood today, so everyone had better back the fuck off. To begin, I stepped in a big pile of cat vomit this morning. Didn't see it there on the carpet, but I surely felt it going around barefoot. Next I opened up my last bill from Xcel only to see they still have me listed as having not paid my bill for July! Fuck that! The check was cashed 2 months ago! Now I need to dig through all of my boxes and hope that I didn't throw out that bank statement and cancelled check yet. Fucking fuck. Then there's the job thing - still don't have one. It's a little late to call them back now on that job that began today and the other staffing agency still hasn't gotten back to me. What, do they check their email once a day? I just want to kick someone's ass right now. There are other things too, but I don't know who reads this, so I'd better keep my mouth shut on them. Grrr....

Should I Call Them Back? ::

Employment agency #1 just called me up with a second job offer today. The job would have started tomorrow and run through Saturday (just a 4-day temporary assignment). As I understand it, it would have basically consisted of answering phones to take notes on questions from people about the Monsters, Inc. dvd (which apparently came out today). I turned her down on account of not wanting to work on Saturday, but now I'm thinking about reconsidering. I mean, it's only one Saturday and not months upon months of Saturdays. Of bigger concern to me is having to take phone calls from people which she seemed to classify as some sort of complaint line. I'm not good at handling those sorts of people. Well, I am, but not when I'm not well acquainted with the product or the company's policies. So what should I do? Call her back and take the job? Move on and hope for something else? I need input here people.

What? Do I Need an AARP Card for Service? ::

I went to George Webb today for lunch and got the worst service I've ever gotten there. I walked in about 11, sat down in a booth in the non-smoking section, and was pretty much forgotten about. The waitress did come around and take my order, but then she pretty much left me alone. She never brought me my soda. My food sat under the heat lamp until Candace (who was cooking) finally brought it out to me herself. She never came around to inquire how the food was or if I needed anything else. Instead she kept ignoring me and going over to get things for all of the elderly customers in the place. I almost felt age discriminated. If it weren't for the fact that I've been in there so many times before and gotten such better service each of those times I'd be tempted to not want to go back. Is that how they treat all the young people who go there to eat? I mean, I'm not even that young anymore! The waitress did finally come back to bring me my bill (go figure). Of course, she had charged me for the soda, so I had to bitch her out about that. She tried to tell me it got squirrelly, but I was right there and I saw exactly what she was doing. Needless to say, I wasn't happy.

Almost Ambitious ::

I finally built up enough ambition and courage to call another temp agency. After looking through several newspapers yesterday and checking out online listings and the Yellow Pages today, I called another staffing agency and inquired about their services. They had me email them my resume and tell them which jobs on their website sounded most appealing. Now they're supposed to read over my resume before sending me an application. We'll see how it all goes from here, but hopefully this will lead to something... unlike anything those other jackasses have found for me so far.

Turned Down ::

I was sitting in the basement watching Marty this morning (hey, if it's good enough for Herb Stempel then it's good enough for me) when the girl from the staffing agency called. She said she had a potential job for me and wanted to know if I was interested. After telling me all about it, I did the thing I thought I'd never do: I turned it down. Now let me tell you about the job and you'll see why. The job was working for H & R Block during tax season. The job wouldn't have actually begun until January 15 and then would have ended on April 15. In the time leading up to January 15 I'd have had to take their tax course. 2 days a night and 3 hours a night I would have had to attend a tax course which I wouldn't have been paid to attend. Afterwards I'd have had a fulltime job for 3 months at $8 an hour. I'd be quite surprised if they actually found any suckers to take it. So, the search for employment drags on.

I Gots Ideas ::

Several of you already know about my idea to purchase a season ticket for one of the worst seats in the Metrodome and then give it away at every Twins home game next season as the "Krayzee Krist Koroch Seat." Well, my newest idea is just a genius. You see, I'm getting to be frustrated enough that I want to give up on the concept of ever finding employment for myself. Instead I want to scour the classifieds for the "Employment Wanted" section, from which I will hire all the candidates - qualified or not - to be my minions and do my dirty work. Actually, that's a bit of a misstatement. I want to start an all-encompassing business. I wouldn't actually be an employment agency, as it would be my company doing the work. You have plumbing expertise, we'll send you out on plumbing jobs. Great at data entry, we'll give you data to enter. Not so good at water polo in shark and alligator infested waters? We'll hire you for it anyway. I'm going to make billions.

Just Lookin' ::

I still haven't found employment. I started this morning by searching the classifieds in the Post-Crescent. I had to return my movies to the library, so since I was there I checked out other classified sections in other papers. I ran into Erik there doing the same. Found nothing. I checked out Juliette of the Spirits, Best in Show, and Marty. After I returned home I placed a call to the staffing agency to see if they had anything yet. I think they're just jerking me around. Their ad in yesterday's paper claims that they have 11 administrative assistant openings, yet the girl at the agency told me they had nothing for me. Not only am I getting frustrated, but I'm also getting ready to file a complaint with the state for false advertising and shoddy business practices. If you don't really have jobs, then don't advertise that you do. In brief, no, I didn't get my name in at any more staffing agencies today. As a result, I'd really like to be out of the house before my dad gets home from work. Tomorrow - tomorrow I get my name in somewhere else.

I Shit You Not - 3 Nights in a Row ::

Yes faithful readers I have gone out in the splendid bliss of socializing for the third night in succession. This evening brought me yet another set of mild-mannered adventures. The night began with Erik picking me up about 9. We drove down to Oshkosh to do some drinking and hear some jazz at Peabody's. The place was mostly populated by fat, unattractive women, desperate macks, and some raver guy who kept sipping on a screwdriver and grooving. I also saw Brian there (former employee of the Exclusive Company and vocalist for the band Saint Louis). We left there about midnight and decided to see if Jeff Scott was home. We went to his place and hung out shooting the shit for several hours. We left there then about 2:15 and headed back to Appleton. Erik and I were both interested in a little late night nourishment so we stopped in at GW. Trixie was in there freaking out about what to write for an intro to film paper. The problem was mostly that the level of the class is far below her own knowledge of film and she wanted to overanalyze into abstracts instead of writing the simple paper the assignment was asking for. Erik and I talked to her while we ate. We then all left just before 4 and Erik dropped me back at home. I am of course just about to go to bed, but I wanted to make this entry before I actually headed there. Oh, and Molly - since I know you'll read this, I wanted to tell you that I found out from talking to Erik that he knows Megan. They worked together in the computer labs at UWM. That is all.

2002 AL Central Champs!!! ::

Congratulations go out to the Minnesota Twins - 2002 American League Central champs. The team hasn't been to the postseason since the World Championship year of 1991 (a palindrome just like this year) so the wait was a long time coming. I can't wait to be able to see the team on tv again as I'm sick of having almost nothing but the Brewers and Cubs to watch. Of course, the coverage then will probably consist of Fox people and I miss Dick and Bert. Anyway, yet again the Twins clinch a division title on the road, but we'll take it anywhere as long as it counts.

UPDATE on Trivia 2003 ::

It may be quite premature for me to be passing on such insider speak and hearsay but Trixie and I were discussing trivia for this coming January and it seems a good possibility that Too Much Trivia in the Pants and Nudge will merge this year. As the idea has only recently been presented and not yet fully discussed I don't have any details to pass on. The merger could just be for this year or it may be more permanent. I'd prefer the one-year only route, but without guaranteed accomodations for TMTITP this may be our only path for survival. At any rate, I'll update you all as soon as I know more and I'll also be sending out the usual annual reminder emails to all the teammates.

Wow! Two Nights in a Row! ::

Yes faithful readers, I, your anti-social host and narrator, went out on the town two nights in a row. I'll begin by recounting Friday night and then I'll get into Saturday night.

I went over to Trixie's a little after 9:30 Friday night. Squishy and Cory met us there and we all rode to Squishy's in his car. Oh, and he just happens to live next to the old Metallica residence on Pacific at Bates and Dunlap. The four of us started out by walking over to Subway so Trixie could get food. From there we headed down Colleve Avenue to Dr. Jekyll's (or as it was previously and more aptly named, Pat's Tap). Along the way I saw Mom and Dad (Tony's parents) driving along the Ave in Mom's new Mini Cooper. I yelled to them and caught their attention, but either they didn't recognize me or they ignored me. Anyway, we got down to Jekyll's and I had my first couple beers there. I downed a pair of Leinie's while admiring signed bank notes on the wall. One of them was signed by a certain J. Konz, who I suspect to be the man who was the first to ever get me drunk. Anyway, Trixie, Cory, and I were getting bored so we talked Squishy into leaving and heading down to Firefly. Sitting there I had PBR, and then they ran out of that so I had to switch to Rolling Rock. The seating organization there was such that it was difficult for all of us to interact, so I sat there staring at the tv or into space. As Trixie put it, I looked like the miserly old regular sitting at the beer sneering at the kids. Then we walked down to Big Belly. Some band from Milwaukee was playing there. Trixie, Squishy, and some female friends of Trixie's sat at a table, but Cory and I took up seats at the bar. I downed a couple of Miller Lite's and a shot of Jack that some guy bought for Cory and I. Some girl from Milwaukee who was with the band saw my GVSB shirt and asked me if I liked Sunny Day Real Estate. She was happy just to know I'd heard of them. She proceeded to ask me my opinion on both Fugazi and Jets to Brazil before giving me her business card. Apparently she and some of her friends write their own online music zine. I haven't gotten a chance to check it out yet. Okay, so we left there about 2 and were going to go to Illusions but they had already quit serving (what the fuck?!), so we went to Houdini's instead for the nightcap. I slammed my bottle of Miller Lite and they sent us all out after playing "Welcome to the Jungle." We congregated on the corner of College and Appleton for who knows how long. While standing out there Ben passed by and I caught his attention so he came and joined us. We ended up walking back to Squishy's where he made frozen pizza. Ben stopped over with the footage he'd shot already for his movie, but Cory wanted to get going, Trixie was going to leave with him, and since my car was at Trixie's, it meant it was my time to leave as well. We stumbled back to Trixie's leaving Cory at his place and by then I was sober enough to drive the few blocks home. It was 4 by then, so I went straight to bed.

I'll skip the less-than-exciting details of Saturday pre-sunset and jump straight to the evening. Matt called me up and invited me over to go drinking. He, Carrie, and I went to the Bar on Lynndale. I drank a few beers, Matt filled up on Jack and Cokes (the special of the night) and Carrie drank a couple LIT's. By the time we left she was pretty lit up. We went through the drive-thru at Taco Bell and then went back to their place to play Top Shop. It quickly became apparent that the game could go on forever tonight so since everyone was falling asleep we decided to just save it and quit. That was about 2 and I came home afterward. I'm not exactly tired now, but I just know my parents are going to drag my ass out of bed early in the morning to go to church. I wish I had the balls to just tell them that I don't believe in any religion (let alone their's) and have no interest in going to church, but I just don't need any more conflicts with them right now. Uff-da.

Oh There's My Desk! ::

I haven't posted an update since Wednesday afternoon not because nothing has happened but rather because I haven't been able to get to my computer since then. In my continuing work on cleaning and reorganizing my bedroon I attacked the closet. The carnage was most heinous, but it seems the battle is dying down and now I can actually access my computer again. The garbage can and the recycling bin have taken quite a hit and much of it may need to be rationed and held over until next week in favor of more urgently disposed of refuse (such as kitchen scraps). It's hard to believe that my room is nearing some sense of order and cleanliness. By the time I'm done it'll probably be the cleanest it's been since we moved into this house over 15 years ago.

This cleaning job has allowed me to re-discover some items I had either forgotten about or didn't realize I still had. In addition to notebooks upon notebooks of things thought lost, I also discovered the NMA handbook, the Freak-of-the-Day book, and the original Innerground among many other things. While I've thrown away quite a bit, rare gems such as those listed above have moved into a new archive.

I didn't go out at all last night, but the night before was the first I'd really left the house since moving back home (not counting the trip to Minnesota or the 2 hours spent at Matt and Carrie's on Labor Day). Wednesday night Matt, Carrie, and I went to the martini bar. We spent quite a bit of time there sipping drinks from glasses that reeked of cleaning fluid. We later went back to their place and watched tv. Ben stopped by with some food from Dahmer-no's but didn't stay long. I left about midnight so they could go to bed. Driving past George Webb I saw that Trixie was working so I stopped in. Shane (of Appleton Imports fame) was there, having just come from a foosball tournament at some bar. I sat at the end of the counter closest to the smoking booths talking to Trixie when she was on break and several others when she wasn't. I hadn't intended to stay long, but she and the other employees kept refilling my coffee cup. Finally sometime after 3 I started hiding my cup so they couldn't keep filling it. I think I made it home by 4.

So the weekend has come and I don't have a job lined up yet. Although it's only been a week since I signed up with the staffing agency my parents are getting antsy for me to find a job. I promised my mom earlier in the week that if the staffing agency hadn't found me anything by the end of the week I'd go put in my application elsewhere come Monday. Well, I guess that's what I'll be doing. I'm not totally penniless though, as a check for my security deposit came today from Minneapolis. I got the full amount back, so that's another $500 to keep me going for a while. My dad is already freaking out about my ability to make my next car insurance payment, and that's not due until the end of November/beggining of December! It's only been 2 weeks yet my parents' nagging is already really getting on my nerves.

My Car Is Happy Again ::

There - I just went and got my car's oil changed. As stated previously, it was about time after going 5 months and 5,000 miles. Not being employed at the moment, I couldn't afford the fancy full-service oil change where they use the good oil and check all the fluids. Instead I got the $17.95 special and used lesser oil. Hopefully by next time I have a job and can afford to use better oil, because I'm sure my car will thank me for it.

My Mouth Is Writing Checks My Ass Can't Cash... ::

... or something like that. I mean, uhh... nevermind. I am spending money though that I don't actually have. Well, have to spend that is. I went to Target again this morning, and we all know that one cannot walk out of Target without spending much more money than intended. Although I used a good measure of restrain today, I still bought a storage shelf for my computer and picture frames. I used the frames to hang up the infamous "Utah" pictures (the grilled cheese, hula-hoop, and trophy wife). I should have taken before-and-after photos of my room because it has already changed quite a bit since I moved back here and it will still continue to change more. Gone are all the Pearl Jam posters and Concert Cafe fliers dating back to high school and replacing them are... well... not much noteworthy, but at least it's better than the old posters and fliers. The saddest part is that redecorating my room has become my own version of a social life. Excluding last weekend's trip to Minnesota, the only time I have gone out was when I went to Matt and Carrie's on Labor Day. I'm not really too worried, but I think my parents are getting worried that I've become depressed and anti-social. Little do they know I'm not depressed, but I've been anti-social my entire life. Why go out when staying in is more fulfilling? Anyway, I need to find some lunch and then I think I'll try to get my oil changed finally this weekend. It's only been, I don't know, about 5 months and 5,000 miles since the last one.

Let's All Go To The Library ::

I went to the public library yesterday afternoon. I spent quite a bit of time just wandering the non-fiction section in search of interesting books. I ended up coming home with 3 DVDs - Pabst's Diary of a Lost Girl (I have considered buying this myself, so I wanted to see how good the quality is), Tati's Playtime, and Buster Keaton's College (which I watched last night) - and a book on television production. I'm working my way through the television book in preparation for starting pre-production work on my tv show. So far the book has been rather informative even for being nearly 20 years old.

Back in Appleton Again ::

After my short weekend in Minnesota I'm back in Appleton again. I got back here yesterday just before half time of the Packer game. After watching that I started watching the Sampras-Agassi match, but I got bored with the all-serve, no-volley style. My parents had rented High Crimes and wanted to get that back to the video store, so we watched that. I started watching the Twins game, but once again they were playing so poorly that I got bored and fell asleep. Then I just went to bed... how exciting!

Woowoo!!! GVSB Kick Ass!!! ::

Just got back to Molly's a little bit ago from the Entry. The openers were pretty shitty and Molly and I just sat in the back. I moved up to the front for Girls Against Boys where I ran into Kate Silver. I talked to her between bands, but she left shortly after their set started. I was especially surprised at the lack of songs off Freak*on*ica, leading me to question if they're fighting a legal battle with Geffen. They played a few songs off the new one, 3-4 off House, a couple off Cruise Yourself (including "I Am from France" and "Sexy Sam"). They even jumped all the way back to Venus Luxure. The encore inckuded "In Like Flynn" and "Kill the Sex Player." All in all pretty kick ass and definitely worth the drive out here.

Molly and I went to see One Hour Photo Saturday afternoon also. I'm not sure yet how I'd rate it, but it turned out to be a little better than I had expected based solely upon the opening sequences. I see the Uptown is showing the re-released version of Metropolis starting on Friday, but of course i won't be here.

Okay, I should go. I need to get to bed so Molly can get to bed. I also need to get up and get on the road in the morning. Nighty night!

Hello from Lauderdale ::

I'm currently sitting in Molly and Justin's livingroom typing on Justin's laptop. I arrived here last night in time for Molly and I to get to the game early. We got our Homer Hankies and sat down for batting practice. In perhaps the best game I've been to the Twins beat the A's 6-0 to end Oakland's 20-game winning streak. The win, combined with Cleveland's win over Chicago, dropped the Twins' magic number to 8.

The current plan is that I want to go to see One Hour Photo at the Uptown at 2:45. Doors for the GVSB show aren't until 9 - that's for the 21+ show. The all ages show starts if course nuch earlier.

Time to go - I'm getting hungry and smelling Justin's turkey leg and saurkraut aren't helping any.

Am I Mistaken Or Are They? ::

The Twins website says the magic number is 11, but according my calculations - as the magic number was 13 when we went to the game last week, the Twins won on Wednesday, and Chicago lost their last 2 - shouldn't that make the magic number 10? Or am I just an idiot?

Let's Hope for a Non-Freaky Friday ::

Good morning all! Fret not, for I am not as sore as expected. My lower back was a little sore when I first got up this morning, but that has also since passed. I'm going to hold off on a continuation of the running until Monday because I don't know if I'll have time to run, shower, and then get to my interview in time. Instead I'm killing some time online while listening to GVSB and getting pumped about tomorrow night's concert. I'm also even more pumped about tonight's Twins game now that Molly pointed out that the first 20,000 fans get Homer Hankies. Woohoo - Homer Hankies!!! We're going to end Oakland's long, lucky, and hard-fought win streak with the power of the Homer Hanky. Huh-zaa!

I'm Really Not In a Bad Mood ::

I spent a nice chunk of today driving around looking for picture frames (unfortunately nobody makes one regularly available larger than 24 x 36) and storage stands and another chunk working on my bedroom. I finally got the dresser moved out, the bed moved over, and my bookshelves moved in. I probably won't get any more accomplished today or tonight. I can't really bring up my books or stereo because they're well buried below the rest of my things. I'm going to have to do a lot of digging to be able to get to that stuff. The picture frames I was looking for need to be 27.5" wide by 39.25" tall. They're for movie posters. What I'll probably end up doing is building my own. Well, with my dad's help that is. I'm not really mechanically inclined enough to build something such as that on my own. Either way, it'll get done eventually.

I'm not planning on getting any of that done tomorrow either. I have an interview with the staffing agency at 8:30. I'm planning on leaving for the Twin Cities right after that. Molly and I are going to the Twins game tomorrow night. Oakland pulled off yet another win last night, but hopefully Minnesota can make the streak end at 20 tomorrow night. Saturday afternoon I want to go see One Hour Photo at the Lagoon. Saturday night is the GVSB show at the Entry. Sunday I'll drive back here (hopefully in time to catch the better part of the Packer game).

I went out running this morning. Convinced that I need to lose 40-50 pounds, I figured exercise might need to be involved. I actually made it all the way around the block. Afterward I was stiff as a board. I walked over to the elementary school and back, but that just made it worse. When I returned home I stretched, which helped, but I was so stiff that stretching was no easy task. It doesn't help any that I don't currently own any running shoes. I wore my regular shoes, which I'm sure are the reason my back was so sore when I was done. I'm not in pain now, but I might be tomorrow morning. Uff-da.

Missing Flags Make Me Happy ::

The flag which a firefighter stole from a yacht and he and two of his buddies raised in that ubiquitous photo from September 11 is missing. Sorry if I sound like a bastard, but I'm happy to hear it. To me America is more than a stupid flag and being an American includes protecting your rights and freedom by using your rights and freedom. I'm sick of hearing about this stupid flag and I'm sick of everyone kissing Giuliani's ass. I'm not running for office, so I can say any damn thing I want. Giuliani was a horse's ass for 7 1/2 years and so 1 day can never change that truth - he's still an ass hole. I can't believe millions of people are that forgetful and/or ignorant. Blah blah blah - I'm not really in as bad a mood tonight as all my complaining might imply.

No More Complaining About the City ::

I always like to be on the forefront of gossip and news on people with whom we went to high school. Well, I don't know if it was him or not, but I saw a guy today at Tom's with a female and a child who bore an uncanny likeness to Breck Duerkop. I don't know if it was him or not, but the gentleman in question looked quite a bit like him and had his same gangly mannerisms....

Ugggh ::

In more complaining about Appleton, they have re-designed their website. While it's ever so slight an improvement over their old site, it's chock-full of crap. Not only is there an excessive use of Comic Sans (the WORST and most OVERUSED font ever created), but it was obviously designed by some moron just learning how to use Photoshop and Dreamweaver. Pfft - learn some design skills and how to write your own code.

Our Common Council Lacks Common Sense ::

The Appleton common council voted last night 14-2 in favor of closing College Avenue to vehicles after 9 pm on Friday and Saturday night. Well, actually the vote was to run it as a test starting with Octoberfest the last weekend in September, but even as a test the idea is stupid. Now let me tell you why....
  1. Let's quit bull-shitting; the real intent of the proposal is to curb cruising on the Ave. The problem is that this forces the teenagers elsewhere in town. Not only will they pick a new strip for cruising, but the police will be forced to branch out more in their patrols.
  2. Closing the main drag through downtown does nothing but cause a traffic nightmare. I'm all in favor of pedestrian zones, but not when the pedestrian zone closes the main east-west route through the center of town.
  3. There isn't a damn thing to do downtown other than drink. Closing the streets just better facilitates pub crawls.
  4. The argument is that closing the street off proved very popular for the celebration of the re-opening of the street. Yes, that may be true, but that was a one-time opportunity. People in this town aren't going to come out every weekend to do nothing.
  5. Wouldn't it make more sense to close the street when people are awake and the shops are open? Closing the street after 9 on Friday and Saturday nights achieves nothing, as most people in this one-horse town are already going to bed and there is nothing for them to do downtown even if they weren't. Once again, we're back to points #1 (this is only being done to curb cruising) and #3 (we're only going to facilitate pub crawls).

Maybe I'm just dumb, but I don't understand how 14 of the 16 alderpersons voting didn't see the sheer stupidity of this idea. I'm starting to hate this town.

The Pits ::

La la-la la-la... sitting around the house, bored, with nothing to do again. I'm not totally truthful in that - I do need to do more work on my bedroom this afternoon - but I'd much rather be out and about. I went to the bank this morning, transfered funds, got a new PINumber, and picked up an application for a check card. Since the account is a joint account with my mom (ask her why), I have to have her signature on it also, so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to turn it back in. I checked both ShopKo and Kohl's for picture frames large enough to hold the movie posters I have left over from the film fest, but neither had one large enough. Actually, that's not totally true either - Kohl's had a fancy picture frame with dimensions something like 40 x 27, but I'm not going to splash out $40+ for a picture frame. I just want one of those cheap plastic things. I think I'll probably have to go to a frame store. Unless it moved or went out of business, there used to be one relatively nearby.

Okay, so I have to spend this afternoon cleaning stuff out of my bedroom and preparing things to be moved. I told my dad I'd have everything ready for the bed and dresser and things to be moved when he came home. It's not like it's some sort of requirement, but it is something that I'd like to have done. I also have to do some vacuuming so I can put the couch and tv and things downstairs in the Red Room. They're all in the basement already, but there's no room in the Room to put any of it right now.

Doing Whatever I Can ::

Bored and restless tonight, I decided to hop in my car and drive around town snapping photos. Most of them were taken downtown, but a few of them come from others points north. I quickly moved them to my computer and created 16 new headers for my pages to randomly appear (collect them all!). Now I've finally replaced the Minneapolis pics since I don't live there anymore. I still can't believe it's not even midnight yet. Jesus there's nothing to do here.

Now This Is Just Ridiculous ::

So I'm reading this article about a college student who was caught taking photos of police cars and I'm left asking what law did he break? I myself have also taken several photos of police cars and see nothing illegal in the practice. I'm not a terrorist and I have no intention of becoming one. I simply have an interest in the cars coupled with pride in my city of residence (no matter how boring it may be) represented by the vehicles of those paid to serve and protect us. The key here is that they work for us. The police department is a public entity and police cars are public vehicles. While we may not have permission to operate them, we should have the right to photograph them as we please. Public property has different rights than private property. While photographers may be required to receive permission to photograph and distribute photos of private property, the same does not apply for public property. Imagine if we no longer allowed people to photograph the Statue of Liberty because it might be a security risk, as any Middle Easterner who snaps a photo might be a terrorist who could use the photo to plot an attack on the statue. Doesn't that sound completely asinine? Well it's the same idea being expressed by telling this young Syrian-American lad that he can't photograph police cruisers - balderdash.

This Place Sucks ::

Day 3 of the Great Appleton Experiment and I'm already bored out of my fucking mind. I'm sitting here in my bedroom on a Tuesday night with not a thing to do. About the only to do is to clean something. There's nothing worth watching on tv. There's nowhere to go. Everybody is either out of town or they don't feel like doing anything tonight. Blah blah blah. How the hell am I supposed to put up with 12 months of this? At this rate I'll be lucky if I last a month.

I made strides today toward finding a job, which would occupy at least part of my day. I called the staffing service this afternoon and set up an appointment for Friday morning. I have to bring with me my resume on paper and disk, 2 forms of ID, and 2-3 business references. I hope they don't mind that none of my references will be local. I'm bored, I'm bored, I'm so bored, I'm bored.

Ah, This Is Better ::

I still have a long way to go in my process of unpacking everything, but I made some nice progress today by doing some more work in my bedroom, getting my desk moved, and now getting my computer set up. It was something of a necessity, as I have my resume saved on this computer and I need it for the employment agency.

On the Prowl ::

I'm up this morning and on my way. I got a haircut this morning, I'm making lunch right now, and then this afternoon I'm going to give the employment agency a call. I'm searching for stuff online at the moment, but this one local staffing service claims to have 6 admin assistant openings right now. I want a piece of that action.

Pfft. Yeah, the Twins. I leave town and they can't win a game. Last night was loss number 5 in a row. It was also Chicago's 6th straight win. Let me remind everyone that the season isn't over yet and that magic number is still firmly placed at 13. What it needs is a push.

Moves You Didn't Think You'd Hear About ::

Amelia moving to Savannah, Georgia. Wow.

Yes, I'm Still Here ::

I'm sitting here at my parents' computer in Appleton. I still don't have my computer set up. I actually don't have much of anything unpacked. I'm busy working on reorganizing my bedroom before I go puting all of my things in there. Of course, it won't all fit, so lots of it will have to be kept in the basement as well.

We moved my stuff out of my apartment Saturday morning. We didn't finish moving out and cleaning until a few minutes after noon, but since we (actually, mostly my mom) did such a good job of cleaning (meaning less work for him), the maintenance guy didn't charge me for getting out late. My dad headed straight back, but my mom rode with me and we stopped for lunch. After getting back to Appleton, we unloaded the vehicles and then went to Frank's for dinner. I came home and fell asleep before the tv. I did a little work on my bedroom and watched some tv on Sunday. Sunday afternoon I went over to Matt and Carrie's. Mom made dinner, so I came home for that. Then I went with Mom and Dad and my aunt, uncle, and cousin to see the worst movie of the year: Episode 2. I'll get more into that later. By the time I got home I was tired again, so even though Matt and Carrie invited me to come out for a drink, I stayed home and fell asleep before the tv again. Those same relatives and my grandma are coming over for lunch today.

Similar to Episode 1, I only went to see Episode 2 because my parents were paying. I don't know if even that was worth it. The script was so completely horrible and cliched. The computer graphics were about as fake as computer graphics can be, and unfortunately almost the entire movie was constructed using them. Have model and set building become lost arts? Worst of all was Hayden Christensen. He's worse than Arnold and Stallone combined! He's not good looking, he looks nothing like the kid who played Anakin in the last movie, and his range of acting consisted of one facial expression which he tried to use in every situation. Episode 2 was so bad that it almost made Death to Smoochy look Oscar-worthy. Ugh.

How about those Twins? I didn't really catch any of Saturday's game, but those A's are tough. Although the Twins didn't seem to play that terribly, the A's were just up to every challenge. Most amazing had to be yesterday's game and the 9th inning. What are the chances that Michael Cuddyer would hit a homerun off Billy Koch and Corey Koskie would hit his first homerun since early July in the same inning? Even more unlikely is that Oakland would come back with a game-winner in the bottom of the 9th. With thw current 4-game losing streak and Chicago's 5-game winning streak, the magic number had held at 13 just as the division lead has dropped back down to 13 game again. Should we be thankfully that the Twins are moving on to Seattle tonight? With Eric Milton making his comeback, I should think so. Even so, Johan Santana, who has been filling for Milton, is the last starter not to lose....
