It's a nice, cool, and sunny afternoon here on this last day of 2001. I've spent all morning on the internet, and I was watching movies in the background until my brother took over the tv to play video games. I also snapped a bunch of photos of the house (inside and out), but I'm not sure what I'm going to do with them just yet. I have the batteries for my camera charging so I can snap plenty of photos tonight at the New Year's party at Matt and Carrie's without having to worry about my batteried dying on me. As for now, it's time to sign-off, shower, and run my errands. I have to find a gag gift and I have to run to the liquor store. The party has a 70's theme and I guess people are dressing up, but I'm not going to bother. I don't see a point in running to the thrift store to pick up some lame outfit I'm never going to wear again. Yeah, I'm both a partypooper and a cheapskate... sue me.

I'm finally away from the family for a little while. My brother is still in bed, but otherwise noone else is home. It's nice to have them out from under my skin finally, because they were all getting to me - every single one of them. You can only spend so much time around people with whom you have nothing in common and eventually you want to strangle them. Arrrrgh.

I guess I need to jump back to Saturday night. I was online until almost 11, but then I got sick of being locked up around the family, so I went out. I first went to George Webb, where I did homework and wrote in my journal. It started to pick up in there about 1, so I packed up my things and left. I headed on over to Trixie's, where there were many cars, but nobody was answering the door. I went to the side and saw there was a party going down in the kitchen, so I went back to the front and let myself in. I must have arrived right about the climax of the party, as it slowly started degenerating thereafter. When I left at 3, everyone was settling into their alcohol and there was a lot of silly drunk talk. I was back home and in bed about 3:15. Of course, Mom and Dad found it important to wake me up for church anyway, so there I was on 3 hours of sleep. I ended up napping for chunks of yesterday afternoon and fell asleep early last night as a result. That also means that I was up pretty early this morning. That's not exactly what I wanted for New Year's Eve Eve.

Today's entertainment shall come courtesy of my old friends the Marx Brothers. TCM is showing their movies starting at 8:30 this morning, with the final one starting at 3:15 tomorrow morning. My parents aren't happy that I'm taking up one of the tv's for 8 hours tonight to record movies, but ah... I don't care.

I'm currently pissed about several things involving family members, but we're about to eat lunch, so I'll have to put off updating about that and about what I did last night until later when there's more time and I don't have family members hovering over my shoulders. Later!

I made it home, but it has been a long day. We went over to my aunt and uncle's house about 10:45 to eat lunch. Of course, that means we all overstuffed ourselves. We filled the afternoon by watching Legally Blond and Shrek and playing sheephead. After stuffing ourselves again, we played two games of Trivial Pursuit - once with the Genus I, and once with the Disney Family Edition. We left after finishing that second game and went over to another aunt and uncle's house, where we didn't stay long, but the women were able to show off family gifts (as my mother is doing now with my grandmother). So she doesn't have to drive back home after dark, my grandma is staying at our place tonight. I don't think I'm doing anything, because I'm feeling pretty tired anyway.

On a positive note, I mostly avoided the questions about my future. A few relatives asked a question here or there, but for the most part the subject was avoided. I just hate having to answer questions when I don't know the answers myself. I guess for the most part the family avoided most conflicts today. Yep, that's good.

I managed to keep tonight from being as late as the last few. Of course, it makes a difference when everyone is tired early. I met Matt and Carrie at the Bar, where they were finishing off a basket of wings and their drinks. I had a beer, and then we left for the martini bar. The three of us each had a drink there while we sat talking for a long time. Ben met us there later, and then the four of us all went back to Matt and Carrie's place. Carrie was pretty tired and crashed quickly on the couch, but the three of us sat up talking until about 1. Now I'm home, and I'll most likely be hitting the sack soon, as I need to get up in the morning to go over to my aunt and uncle's for another family holiday gettogether. I hate these things. This family doesn't like that family, and this family has a grudge with that family. In attempts to be polite, every single person has to ask me the same questions, like "How's college going?", "How does it feel to be almost done?", and "What are you going to do after you graduate?" Well, why don't you go ask the other 15 family members I've already been forced to give the answers to today. Yeah, that's how my day will be tomorrow. I've been trying to be quiet, shy, and anti-social around them all lately, but it doesn't seem to be working. Instead they all thing I'm depressed and want to know what's wrong. Grr...

I guess we're going drinking. I hate bars, but there's nothing else to do in this damn one-horse town. I'm told that we're going to go to The Bar first for wings and darts, and then they want to go to the martini bar. Eh, it's getting me out of the house.

I'm not certain if she read my last entry or not, but Carrie took me up on it and called me. I went to dinner at George Webb with my mom, and now I'm back home waiting for Carrie to call again and tell me they're done eating. I'm not sure yet what we'll be doing tonight, but atleast I won't be spending the night in front of the tv or the computer.

Good... uhh... afternoon everyone. What's new? I have a particularly lazy day on the books for today. I woke up around 11 this morning and turned on My Little Chickadee on TCM. Right after that was The Producers, and right now I'm recording Holiday. There are plenty of other great films on TCM today, but I'm only going to record One-Eyed Jacks and Jules and Jim. I don't really have any plans for today anyway, so I guess I'll just watch movies all day and night. Call me if you have any better ideas.

I just returned home from another late night on the town. While I'm not minding the temporary nocturnal lifestyle I've adopted over break, the stench of smoke that my clothes are absorbing is just plain disgusting. It gets in your clothes and it just won't leave. Tonight was another good opportunity to suck up more of it. After finishing my last post, I stayed online until a little after 5, at which time I decided to go to bed. Thing is, my mom chose the same time to get up for the day. She figured that since I was still up, my goal was probably to take her to work so I could have a car. At 5:30 in the morning, it sounded like a good idea to me as well. So, we left a little while later, and I dropped her off at work at 6. I then returned home and promptly made my way to bed. I ended up sleeping until 1:15. I was considering going to a movie, but of course the next set of matinee shows wouldn't start until after 2, so there's no way I'd make it back at 4 to pick up my mom. I ended up watching my brother play video games, eating lunch, shoveling, showering, and catching a little "Jeopardy!" before I had to pick her up. She made me grilled cheese for dinner, and then my dad and I accompanied her to the bowling alley, as she had league last night. My aunt is on the same team, so my uncle and cousin were also there. We talked and watched them bowl, and they finished about 9. Upon returning home, I dropped Trixie a line, and ended up meeting up with her, Nick, and Nate at George Webb. Nate and Nick didn't stay too long, but Trixie and I stuck around until 1 talking and writing. We then returned to her place, where she cleaned, and then she, Bob, and I talked and watched some stuff. I decided at 3:30 that maybe I should try getting to bed tonight before my parents get up for work, so I took leave and came home. I have a few things to do, but then I'll finally going to bed again. I'm living life with very little order so far this holiday.

As you might have noticed, I haven't posted in a few days. Let me see if I can recall the reasons, and then we'll get into what's new.

My first problem popped up either Monday night or Tuesday morning. That problem occured when someone stole my brother's AOL password and subsequently used his account to send a bunch of spam emails. AOL put a hold on our account and changed all of our passwords. We got that problem cleared up by calling AOL Tuesday night and they informed us of what had happened. When I finally got a chance to get back on then, I went to Blogger, and wouldn't you know that they had been hacked. So, once again, I couldn't update. In the mean time I just worked on other things, which I'll get to shortly.

So, since I missed it, Merry Christmas. Okay, got that out of the way. Now, back to Monday night, the 'rents and I went to church at 11. After we returned home, I watched the end of The Apartment (which I was also taping) and a little of something else before going to bed about 2-ish. My parents woke me up about 8 Christmas morning, and as per tradition, we ate breakfast, opened gifts, and went to my grandma's. We spent the balance of the day at my grandma's, where I ate, watched Shrek, napped a little, ate some more, shot the shit, and came home. I tried calling Matt and Carrie that night, but they were at the movies, so I ended up sitting around at home and watching tv. Eventually I just turned off the tv and slept on the couch.

I was awoken about 5 Wednesday morning by the sounds of my mother and brother getting up for the day. My brother was going skiing, and my mom dropped him off at a friend's house before going to work. I ended up just getting up and watching tv all morning. TCM is my lifesaver. After eating lunch I went online for a bit, and then I went downtown. While down there, I wandered around snapping photos and checking out town. I also made a stop at the library to check out their vhs and dvd collections - not bad. I then came home, ate dinner, and fooled around on the computer some more while waiting for Matt to call. He and I met Carrie at the bowling alley just as her team was finishing up their last game, so the three of us went to The Bar for drinks and wings. We then went back to their place and hung out until about 1. At that time they went to bed, but I wasn't ready to, so I first just drove around town looking at Christmas lights and admiring the newly fallen snow (however little it may be). About 1:30 I decided I should quite driving around aimlessly before I call suspicion from the police, so I stopped over at Trixie's. She was in the livingroom talking to some people, Nick was in his room, and Kara was upstairs. I sat around mostly silent and listening to others talk. At 4 Trixie went over to the neighbor's to watch Heavenly Creatures, but I've never been a big fan of the film, so that's when I chose to take leave. I gave this guy a ride home, and now here I am, home safe and sound and online.

This year, Christmas was good to me. My parents gave me all sorts of useful goodies, including underwear, an answering machine, a vacuum cleaner, and a digital camera. While the first three have gone relatively untouched so far (that'll chance once I get back to Minneapolis!), I've made plenty of good use of the camera. I started by snapping photos of my dad, the house, myself, the cats, and the yard. Wednesday afternoon I finally ventured to leave the house and snapped a number of pictures downtown. I would have taken more, but the batteries died on me. I have the first batch posted, and I'm sure they're just the beginning. I'm still figuring out all the tricks to it, so most of the first pictures are pretty poor, but rest assured I'll get better with practice. That is all... for now.

The day is slowly progressing. I woke up about 10-ish again, read the newspaper, and generally wasted away time. My mom got off of work at noon, so then the fam went and ate lunch. After returning here, I went and bought my brother's Christmas present. While there, I ran into Carrie's brother Austin and some guy I used to play soccer with like 5 years ago. I didn't even remember his name until I saw his nametag, but so it goes with me. After returning home, I went through all kinds of old paperwork thar my mom has gathered in the last 4+ years about the U. I found the loan paperwork in there, where I found out that I only have to be atleast half-time. As a result, I dropped my Scandinavian immigrant class. It's not like I needed it - I only signed up for it so I'd be full-time in the first place. So, that's where I am now. Have to go to church tonight. Haven't been there in a year, and it'll probably be atleast a year before I get dragged there again. My brother complains that he can't stay up until 11 for church (but the baby can stay out with his friends until 1am or later), so he and my mom are planning on going at 7, while my dad and I will go at 11. Yep.

Nothing really new to report. I slept until after 10 yesterday, ate lunch, and spent the balance of the day watching football as usual. Went over to Matt and Carrie's, but I was tired and bored, so I ended up falling asleep. I then came home, and here I am. I suppose I'll be going to bed soon. Of course, this is much better than how I spent this corresponding night a year ago. About this time I was drunk off my ass, and I ended up in the bathroom, passed out for a few hours, and then somehow made it to the guestroom bed. Yep, this is better.

Holy shit.

I'm obviously a little behind in my news since returning to Appleton. I just found out that Liverpool have signed French striker Nicolas Anelka! It's only a loan deal from PSG to the end of the season, but it includes an option to buy out the remainder of his contract at the end of that period. With Milan Baros also being granted his English work permit late this last week, that brings Liverpool's current strikeforce to Owen, Heskey, Litmanen, Anelka, and Baros - quite possibly the best in England, if not all of Europe! Of course, don't forget the two fabulous young Frenchmen set to join the team after next campaign. Wow.

My sleeping habits are jumping all around in the past few days like working rotating shifts. I was up at 5:30 this morning, and here I am still up now at nearly 3:30 - 22 hours later. Tony and I ended up going out tonight, and we first just drove around unable to decide on what to do. After following some old people to Neenah and driving around Menasha, we eventually ended up going to Perkins. We were there for a few hours, and then drove back toward his place. Wired and unwilling to just sit down, we went on a walk, stopping at the laundromat en route to the Big Green Convenience Store (on the right). We then walked back to his place and watched tv until he gave me a ride home just now. Once again, an entertaining night materialized out of nothing special or out of the ordinary. It's about time now to hit the sack.

Bullshit commercial

By now I'll bet most of you have seen the Nike commercials with the rain or snow or whatever. I hate Nike the way it is, but there are just too many things wrong with the snow one, that it has to have been made by southerners for southerners who have never seen snow. Two of the problems are related. The road being plowed isn't slick enough for that big truck to get stuck and start slipping. In the event that it were slippery enough, then that truck would be spreading salt or snow, and the runners couldn't follow behind it. Of course, if it's cold enough for the truck's tires to slip on that little snow cover, it must be really cold, yet you can't see the breath of the runners. Then, there isn't that much snow, yet there are no tracks in the snow in the middle of the city. The only way that there wouldn't be tracks would be if there was a wind blowing snow around and filling tracks. Of course, there is no wind and there are no snow drifts. I'm sorry, I just don't like bullshit commercials. Well, unless they're of the local variety, such as George Corporaal or any with Fancy Ray.

Started doing some reading this morning, and then I called Tony about 11. At some point during the phone call, the fam finally decided to get off their asses and do something, so they rushed me to get off the phone, get dressed, and get ready to go. We ended up going to Applebee's for lunch. It was the first time I'd eaten there, which my parents were surprised to find out, but I've never been there with them, and why would I pay so much money to eat at a place with mediocre food. After returning home, I sat down and watched Better Off Dead, helped my mom decorate cookies, and now I'm watching the Niners game. I'm also waiting for Tony to call me back, but I understand things are pretty crazy over at his place with Grampy and Nana in town.

After the last entry, I went back to pick up my brother. We first went Christmas shopping for Mom, and then we returned home and he went online while I watched a little tv. About 3:30 we went to the theatre and saw Vanilla Sky. The auditorium was freezing (Regal's getting a nasty comment card from me!), but the movie wasn't bad. For the longest time, it's not completely apparent what the hell is going on, but it all gets explained in the end. After we returned home (and I experienced a bit of my brother's road rage), we ate dinner, and I ended up watching a couple Marx Brothers movies before falling asleep on the couch. Having woken up so bright and early this morning, I first took the opportunity to wrap presents before anyone else gets up, and now I'm taking advantage of nobody else being on the computer. Back when my parents still had the p.o.s. old computer, they only went on when they needed it. Now they go on a lot more - especially my mom. As a result, I now have to fight with all three of them for a chance to get on. I guess waking up before 6 isn't a bad way to pull it off.

The first day of Winter is upon us!

My parents returned home about 10:15 last night, so I left about 10:30 and met Trixie at Perkins. Nick was there also, but he had to leave about 1-ish. We sat there talking for a while, and then Shane showed up and joined us as well. I took leave of them about 4 this morning, came home, and sat up reading for my Bergman class until about 5:30 this morning. I slept until a little after 10, then I got up and listened to some music, took a shower, and my brother and I ate lunch. He's getting a haircut right now, and I ran home to pick up the check to pay for it. After his haircut, we're going to go to the movies, but I'm not sure yet what we'll see. I really want to see Vanilla Sky, but we'll see what happens. We might do some Christmas shopping as well (especially since I had to remind him that today is the 21st already).

My parents arrived right as I was leaving for class last night. I went and wrote my test, which sort of sucked, but I'm glad it's all over. After I returned home, we drove down to Bloomington to drop off my car. Of course, my parents got lost 3 times on the way. Eventually they got there. We then returned to Minneapolis and ate dinner at Market Barbecue. We went back to my place, watched a little tv, and went to bed early. We got up about 5:30 this morning and hit the road about 6:30. We got back to Appleton about 11:30, my parents left for work, and I've wasted away my day watching tv. Nothing really exciting to announce for now otherwise.

So I got a little curious...

This afternoon I was sitting around eating the last of my Haloween candy, and while opening a Fun Size 100 Grand, I noticed it said:

For nutrition information,
call 1-800-258-6728,
Mon-Fri, 8am to 4pm Pacific.

Then I got to thinking, you know, I'll bet hardly anybody ever calls them for nutrition information, so maybe I should. Two minutes later I was on hold with Nestlé Customer Service. After being on hold for about three minutes, a nice young lady named Colleen answered. I told her that I wanted some nutrition information, so she inquired what information I was looking for. I asked her for the daily percentages of riboflavin and calcium in a 0.75oz Fun Size 100 Grand. She then put me on hold, and about a minute later came back. She was apparently having trouble finding the information for the size I was requesting. She then told me that a regular size (1.5oz) 100 Grand has 4% of my daily calcium, while a King Size 100 Grand has 8%, to which I commented, "Oh, I could eat less of those and still fill my daily calcium requirements!" Then she asked me what the other one I was looking for was, and I told her riboflavin. Then I had to explain to her what riboflavin was (Vitamin B2 for those of you who were curious), but she still couldn't find it on the list. So, the point of the story is that I'm disappointed in Nestlé for not having information on the amount of riboflavin in their products. Do I look like I want to end up short and bald? I need a certain amount of riboflavin in my diet daily, but I guess Nestlé's 100 Grand bar isn't my optimal choice for riboflavin. I let her go on her merry way, and I went on mine.

I'm still waiting for my parents to arrive. I guess they're not going to get here before I have to leave for campus, so I have to leave my keys behind for them. I just told them not to lose them, as they're my only set. It's time for "Jeopardy!." Too-da-loo!

Good morrow. It just occured to me how dirty my keyboard is. I'm beginning the arduous (that's a good word) process of packing. My parents should be leaving Appleton within the hour, but since I know how quickly they drive, it'll be some time before they actually get here. That's good, because I'm a slow packer. I keep finding more and more places where my cleaning job is obviously half-assed. There are plenty of places where I did a poor job of dusting, sweeping, or mopping. Hopefully my parents won't see too much of this place in the light, so then they won't notice how haphazardly I cleaned.

I gave myself a nice, sustained chuckle this morning. I all stemmed from thinking about Hemingway and his A Farewell to Arms. Then I started thinking about someone saying farewell to their upper limbs. "Good bye arms! Have a nice trip!" Next thing you know, you're like a limbless Mr. Potatohead. No arms. I'm easily amused.

I can't believe I actually read through that entire copy of "Entertainment Weekly." Jesus, what's wrong with me? Oh, procrastination. I knew there had to be a reason. I'm currently getting one of those 8-free-issues deals, with the first one having arrived in the mail yesterday. Of course, since I'll be gone for the next month, the point of 8 free weeks of a magazine really gets lost somewhere in there.

Al and "The Lonely Guy" must have just had the most serious conversation I've ever heard between them. Usually their conversations amount to a lot of joking back and forth, but tonight they were onto the topic of the Twins, and for once Duane (or is it Dwayne?) wasn't tossing little shots Al's way.

Now I'm getting tired. It only seems logical, seeing as the sun set something like 10 hours ago and we're only two days away from the shortest day of the year. To explain further, it's 2 am, I have stuff to do tomorrow, and I didn't do much today. Nighty night.

My apartment no longer reeks of lemon and tobacco. Nope, it now has a new and strange scent. The new scent is a combination of lemon, tobacco, incense, grilled cheese (still lingering in the air from lunch), and Fabreze. I'm putting the final touches on cleaning, but instead of new scents covering up old scents, they seem to only be mixing. If I ever got visitors, I can't imagine what they'd think. I'm still trying to figure out what my parents might be thinking when they walk in the door tomorrow afternoon. We're good to go on that too. As refered to in the note to myself, I called the lady in the 'burbs (who talked on a damn speaker phone the whole time) and set up a time for dropping off the car tomorrow. I then called her daughter, who apparently finds her mother rather absent-minded. She also clarified directions for me (as I'm prone to getting lost as soon as I leave the city). It's actually exactly as the map showed, but as people often do when they're giving directions in an area they know well to someone who has never been there, she gave me all kinds of excessive information which would make the trip sound more complicated if I didn't know better. Oh well, they're giving me a place to ditch my car for the next month (although I'd much rather drive it to Appleton and back), so I shouldn't complain.

Good luck Brosnahan.

I'm still trying to figure out the logic behind attorney James Brosnahan's plan to change the public image of spoiled-little-rich-boy-turned-traitor John Walker Lindh. Public opinion doesn't hold that he's a nutcase like all the religious extremist members of the Qaida. Public opinion is that he's a traitor who chose to fight against rather than for the US. Brosnahan's not going to change public opinion in this one, he's just going to make himself look like an incompetent idiot. Of course, if that's what Brosnahan is aiming for, more power to him.

Let me talk to you about a little pet peeve of mine - incorrect prices on marquees and indoor signage. Curious what I'm talking about? Okay, you see, .99¢ is not the same thing as $.99. .99¢ is the same thing as $.0099. What I'm saying here people, is that if your sign says something like "2 LITERS PEPSI .79¢" I damn well expect that I can give you a penny, get a 2 liter, and I'll even be nice enough to let you keep the change. After all, maybe it'll add up and one day you'll be able to afford to go to first fucking grade, where you learn about fractions and decimals. Fucking idiots. I wonder if there is any kind of legal precedent that would allow me to force people who post incorrect signage to sell their products to me for the price on the sign....

Reading's done and the butter is softening.

I finished my reading in preparation for this afternoon's journalism final, put away the dishes from last night, washed the rest of them, and now I'm letting the butter soften up before making grilled cheese. It's really weird looking around this place and seeing it, for the most part, clean. There are a few things lying around, but those are everyday necessities (such as my bag) and items to be brought home over break (such as my senior paper and the accompanying videotapes). I woke up to find my apartment had a smell of lemon and tobacco. I don't mind the lemon, but the tobacco is nauseating, so I'm burning the last of my incense right now as well. I have my final at 3, after which I'll probably head down to the film society office, as I'll need to kill a couple hours somehow. I'm working at the Bell tonight, and Molly's supposed to meet me there to pick up her tape. Tonight I have to start packing, as my parents will be here tomorrow.

Note to self: Call the old lady out in the 'burbs.

I'm getting there. I dusted, swept, mopped, vacuumed, and washed most of my dishes tonight. I say "most" because I'm letting them air-dry and I couldn't fit them all in the sink at once. I'll just have to take care of the rest in the morning. I just finished watching tonight's MNF game, so now I have the vcr's dubbing the tape for Molly. I still have plenty of reading to do, but since I have the cleaning essentially finished, I can now turn all of my attention toward reading. I'm also listening to Al Malmberg, and he has a guest on right now, but it'll be interesting to hear what he and his guests have to say tonight.

I have to give props to Representative Dean Johnson. He recently sent a letter to the Vikings telling them it'll be difficult for him to continue supporting a new stadium for the team if Randy Moss continues to run wild. The Vikings' response? They think he should concentrate on the positive things Moss does. What?! Moss does positive things? What does Moss do that's positive? He gets paid millions to play a game, and on occasion, he actually feels like doing something to earn atleast part of the millions he's paid to play the game. Where's the positive in that? He acts like a 5 year-old on and off the field. Where's the positive in that? There is no positive in Randy Moss, but the Vikings put up with it because on occasion he decides to try. That's nearly as ridiculous as Carmen Policy coming out initially in support of Cleveland fans on Sunday. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Know what's rather entertaining (to me atleast)? Reading the first entries people make on their blogs when they're trying to get Blogger configured correctly. I didn't bother deleting my own, so you can look back in my archives at my very first entries and find me frustrated and swearing just like everyone else. Of course, I had multiple problems because I was still dealing with Crosswinds as a host back then, but even so, the humor in it is hardly lost. I love to see other people as pissed off about things as I am.

Liverpool and England super striker Michael Owen beat out the likes of Raul, Oliver Kahn, and England-teammate David Beckham today to be named European Footballer of the Year. This makes him the first Englishman since Kevin Keegan back in 1979 to win the prestigious award. Damn straight. Now if he could just stay healthy....

Despite the fact that I really don't feel like doing a damn thing, I've accomplished quite a bit so far today. The ran up to the store and picked up a bottle of Mr. Clean so I can mop the floors. I've been cleaning, putting things away, and throwing away junk like a mad man. The only things left to do are dusting, sweeping, mopping, and washing the dishes. I've also gotten halfway through the reading I need to do before tomorrow's journalism final. On an especially good note for others, I finally discovered the lost England tape. I'm going to start making a copy for Molly now, and then I'll try to get ahold of Jonathan to get a tape from him to make another copy. I think I might actually pull off the impossible and get everything accomplished before my parents get here on Wednesday. Of course, it's too early to be certain just yet.

I'm feeling particularly lazy right now. I mean, my normal level of laziness is well documented, but we're talking about a completely new level of laziness. I'm almost feeling too lazy to even bother finishing my thought here. I want to drop one of my classes for next semester. That's a level of laziness that won't be going away, unlike the sloth that has overtaken me now. If I could drop any of the four classes I'm currently registered for next semester, I'd instantly drop the Scandinavian Immigrant class. It's not that it's a bad class, but rather that I added the class only so I'd be considered full-time. While I'm home for break, I'm going to take the time to peruse my loan papers and see if I really have to be full-time, or if I only need to be making satisfactory advancement toward graduation. I mean, I only need one credit, but there are two classes I need to take. I obviously will have both requirement filled without a third class, let alone a fourth. Now, if I can, I'll drop the fourth, but I'll still keep the third. The third class is the Tolstoy course, and who in their right mind would drop a class on their favorite author in which they'll be reading their favorite book? Rubbish and nonsense I tell you. I suspect what I really need to do instead of rambling here is to just go to bed. I need to clean and read today, and that's hardly happening when I'm encouraging my insomnia by resting my ass before the computer for hours on end. Blah.

Tonight I scrubbed the toilet.

After I finished work tonight at the Bell, I took the deposit to the office and did the paperwork so I wouldn't have to go to the office tomorrow (or should I say today?). Not only do I not want to have to leave my apartment just so I can do the deposit, but I'm also getting sick and tired of the childishness of my co-workers. When Adam can sit around the office with his finger up his ass, surfing the internet, making personal phone calls, and going out to eat while on the clock, but Kyle won't even pay me for the work that I do, I tend to have a problem with that. I also have a problem with the way people try to get out of doing work by offloading it on someone else. You have no idea how many times Al asked Bruno to do something, Al left to run an errand, Bruno ditched out on whatever Al wanted him to do in favor of going home early, and then I had to explain to Al when he returned how "I think Bruno did it, but I don't know, because I'm not his babysitter." Let's not forget about me getting stuck postering because no one else will do it, or me getting stuck schlepping because no one else will do it. If it wasn't for the fact that Al's apparently intimidated by me, the combination of all of them would have driven me to quit a long time ago. As is, I'd look for another job, but I don't think it's really worth it until closer to graduation.

Anyway, where was I? Oh yes, I did the deposit and memberships before coming home. After getting home, I ate dinner and cleaned the bathroom. Well, it's not totally done, as I still need to mop the floor, but that involves buying some floor mopping crap first. I have the mop and bucket, just not the soap stuff. I'll have to get that later today. That leaves the main room, the kitchen, and the entryway left to clean. I also started reading my journalism stuff for the final, but I have a long way to go before Tuesday afternoon. Almost made it to winter break.

Do you know what sucks? Huh? Want me to tell you? Cleaning. Cleaning sucks.

Oh sure, things look nice after you clean them, but is it really worth all of the effort you put into cleaning something just to have it look nice? Sometimes I don't think so. At this point, I'm starting to think that cleaning my apartment is a real pain in the ass. It's quite obvious by now that I'm making progress, but the path to completion is not an easy one. I guess it's my own fault, seeing as until yesterday I hadn't even finished unpacking everything since I moved in about 16 months ago. It's also my fault that I haven't given this place even a small cleaning since probably about May or so.

I have most things put away now, and most of the remaining work involves sweeping, vacuuming, and dusting, but I'm considering leaving the rest of that work for tomorrow morning. I can only handle so much cleaning for one day. The mound of garbage which I have piled up today is amazing. Actually, the most amazing thing about it is how much stuff I decided to throw away that maybe a year or two I never would have. Yes, I'm a pack rat, so sue me. Well, today I went against my pack rat tendencies and tossed out all kinds of papers and things for which I finally came to realize I'll never have a use.

I received a phone call not long ago that had to be least pushy telemarketer I've encountered. The lady was a rep from Qwest, and she wanted to offer me a cell phone. She said that I had reached "prefered customer" status, and they were offering all of their prefered customers cell phones for cheap long distance and emergency uses. Of course, I turned her down, telling her that I have intention of getting a cell phone, because once you have one you never really have privacy anymore (you're technically always near a phone). I found the call especially amusing, because A) I pay my phone bill late every month (I'm currently sitting on the last one, which was due today) and B) I'm leaving them soon to give McLeod a try and see if they can really save me money as they claim they can. I actually thought that was going to be the reason for the call, but it didn't turn out to be that way. Anyway, as soon as I told her I wasn't interested, she just took it and went on her way. Why can't all telemarketers be like that?

Happy birthday Melissa!

I thought it important to begin the day with that. Now, moving on, I started out last night being pretty productive. I started the long and arduous path toward a clean apartment, but I quickly realized that there was nowhere to put everything that's just lying around because my closet was too big a mess. So, I started cleaning out my closet. I don't remember what time it was, I think it was somewhere between 8:30 and 9, I sat down to eat dinner. My dinner entertainment was Santa Claus Conquers the Martians, but it ended up being my sleeping entertainment as well. Noticing that I was dozing off, I turned off all the lights, set the sleep timer on the tv, and laid myself back down on the couch. So much for my two-night bed sleeping streak. Right now I can't really get to my bed, as it's covered in all kinds of crap that I dug out of the closet. Most alarming is the stack of garbage that I pulled out of the closet. I have all kinds of random empty cardboard boxes and plastic bags that should have been discarded long ago and are the biggest reason why my closet was such a mess.

Goals for today? 1) Make more progress in cleaning. 2) Read for the journalism final. 3) Not fall asleep again before 10.

S-A-N-T-A! C-L-A-U-S! Hooray for Santy Claus!

I went to class and turned in all of my crap. I also got to give my presentation. It's a good thing that I showed up for class over a half hour early, because the teacher decided to start class almost 10 minutes early so we could get all of the presentations done in time. That means that instead of giving my presentation to about 40 people, I only ended up giving it to about 15-20 people. I rushed through and did a terrible job, but I got it over with, and he's supposed to be grading these presentations lightly due to time constraints.

I came straight home after class instead of stopping at the office. I know the only work they'd have for me would be to poster again, but I don't know why I should have to do it all the time when they have Adam. I've never seen Adam do a damn thing. Adam shows up in the office, surfs the internet, makes personal calls, goes out to eat, and just sits around, but never does any work. Since he's friends with Kyle, Kyle doesn't force him to do anything, and says nothing to him about paying him for doing nothing or for padding his hours. So, if they want crap done, how about I let Adam do something for once? I doubt he will.

This weekend will be a combination of reading and cleaning my apartment. I have lots of reading to do for my journalism final on Tuesday. It's scheduled for 4, but he said today that we can take it at 3 if we want. I suspect that's what most of the class will do. There isn't really anything I can read for my sci-fi final on Wednesday, so I'll have to just take that one as it comes. We're getting so close....

Checking my email, my mom sent another message about next week and the car. It made me go back and read an earlier email, at which time I saw that she said they're coming Wednesday afternoon, not Wednesday night. In other words, they'll probably even be here before my final. There goes one more day of time for cleaning. At the bottom of the email, she made it sound like she and her co-workers are trying to play matchmaker with me. I think it was intended as a joke. I hope it was intended as a joke. I have no problem with being single, but watching too many movies like I do, I always fear my mom turning into one of those, "When are you going to get married?" moms. Blech.

I hate getting home this late. There's never a place to park when you get home this late, so you end up parking way off in the middle of nowhere. I didn't end up on the hill, but I might as well have. Atleast I got out for once. Molly, Annemarie, and I were going to go to Denny's, but the doors were locked when we got there. There were some old people standing in the lobby, but they must have been leaving, and the place was closing otherwise. What the fuck? Why are they always closed when we go there? We ended up going to Perkins instead (since it's the only other thing in this fucking place). I can't believe that in a metro area of 2.5 million people there aren't any decent places to hang out. We were there until just before 1, then I dropped them off and came home myself. Now I'll be going to bed rather soon. I need to get up in the morning to make sure that I get to class on time.

Hmmm... another featuring me up waaaaay past my bedtime. Go figure. I had signed off quite some time ago and watched Arsenic and Old Lace. I think I might have dozed off for about 5 minutes during the film, but I'm not certain. All I know is that I'm up now. I'm also starting to get a little concerned. You see, my computer is making all sorts of strange noises. In fact, it sounds more like a washing machine than a computer right now. I want to guess there's something wrong with cooling unit, as the fan is the only thing I can think of that might cause these sorts of noises, but I really have no clue. I'll bet turning the computer off for a while might help too. Of course, that would involve signing off again, and that really hasn't been my specialty of late. I have a canker sore, and it hurts like a bitch. It's right at the point where my lower gums meet the inside lining of my mouth just a few teeth right of center, so it's impossible to avoid it. Ouch.

One week until I go home. One week until winter break. One week until I leave the city for a whole month. Of course I'm excited, but I also know what happens when I go home for long periods of time. The first week is usually pretty good: my parents and I get on well and everything is swell. By week two, they start getting irritated by me getting in at 2-3 am every night and by me lying around the house in my pajamas all day watching movies on TCM and AMC. By week three they're yelling at me to get off my ass and do something. Seeing how lazy I'm being, the inevitable what-are-you-going-to-do-with-your-life-after-college question gets asked of me about a dozen times a day, to which I get pissed off and finally answer, "I'm going to be a truck driver/mime/burger flipper for the rest of my life! What's it to ya'?" Come week four, I'm begging to get back here and get classes started again - anything to get away from the 'rents. I know that's exactly how it'll play out, because that's exactly how it always plays out.

Notice I can just talk about my parents like this, and I don't worry about them reading it? That's because even after 3 1/2 years of having a website, they don't actually know about it. Unfortunately, they're starting to get wise. My mom sees me at my site quite often when I'm home, and when she asks what it is, I just reply, "Oh, some website." Last thing I need is for them to find this, because imagine how much I'd have edit what I say. Sheesh.

Going back to the question of what to do after college, we had to take an occupational survey in high school to see what we'd like to do with our lives. It was just included at the end of the usual standardized tests we were administered every other year. When I took the last one, my parents were rather angry with me when I got the results. You see, the only jobs it said I'd have interest in were in the transportation sector. It specifically listed jobs such as truck driver, bus driver, and forklift operator. Thing is, I couldn't help it - the survey asked stupid questions! It asked questions like, "Would you like to operate a blast furnace?" and "Would you like to grout bathroom tiles?" Well, duh! Of course! How answering yes to those questions added up to getting a job in transportation I'll never know, but it seems to be the life for me. My parents are still disappointed that I changed my mind about being an architect. I guess for them there is a huge difference between proudly announcing to other parents, "Our son is an architect." and admitting, "Our son studied German and film studies, and now he's only making minimum wage in a job he loves, but we're embarrassed to admit he does." Well, sucks for them.

Imagine that - two of my most hated books were first published on my birthday (April 14): Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities (1859) and Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath (1939). I think I already knew about them both, but I just confirmed it while searching for the year that Noah Webster published his first dictionary (1828 - also on April 14). Know what else? I hate the fucking pop-ups being used now on the IMDb website! I can understand the need to sell advertising, but it seems like everybody lately has gone to selling annoying pop-up ads. As you might have noticed from my navigation menu, I've started a new project, which I've aptly titled "Malapropism (aka Word-of-the-Day Project)." The concept is pretty simple: my vocabulary is small and often insufficient for my needs. There's nothing worse than being unable to express yourself because you don't know the words. Well, there is one thing, and that would be when you fuck up because you say one thing, but you don't actually know if it's the right word, and it ends up making you look stupid. At any rate, I think you can understand why I've decided to start such a project. Many of the words I chose may not be very applicable to everyday situations, but it can still be fun trying to find a sentence in which to fit them. Check it out or don't check it out - I don't care either way - but maybe we can learn something together.

What the fuck?! He said I'll go first on Friday, but damn it, I was all set to get it over with today. Now I have to sit in anticipation for two more days. Grrr....

Well, I now have two more days until my last class of the semester. I turn in the paperwork part of my presentation and my 1-page response paper for the test. Tuesday is one test and Wednesday's the other. Mom and Dad get here that night. I'm sure every college student in America is saying this right now, but this was one fast semester. Shit, I don't want to lose points just because the damn thing is too long. We'll just have to see what happens. 244.430. Heating facilities. The owner of every building containing habitable rooms shall provide heating facilities and shall be required to see that said heating facilities are properly installed, safely maintained and in good working condition, and that said facilities are capable of safely and adequately heating all habitable rooms, bathrooms and toilet rooms located therein to a temperature of at least sixty-eight (68) degrees Fahrenheit, measured at a distance of thirty-six (36) inches above floor level, and not closer than thirty-six (36) inches from any wall at all times when the outside temperature is at the design level or above. (Code 1960, As Amend., § 71.040; 78-Or-244, § 14, 11-22-78)

So damn it, get the heat turned on!!!

I fucking hate weather like we're experience tonight. The temperature is too warm to be all bundled up, but there is a cold wind blasting through that'll give you chills if you don't keep bundled up. As a result, you return home sniffling and sweating like a pig. I came home feeling all disgusting, but I've since cleaned up, so it's not so bad.

Now that I'm home, I have work to attend to. After working tonight, I made a stop at Wilson and picked up a few books. I don't really need them for my presentation, as I've already found all the info I need and then some on the internet, but I do need them for the annotated bibliography that I have to turn in on Friday. The real bugger is, I'm already tired now, so sitting up working on a presentation is not exactly what I want to be doing. I'll pull through.

I was hoping for a few days after my last final so I could clean around here, but it seems they've chosen to drive up here next Wednesday night, and then we'll head back to Appleton the next morning. They don't want to have to be on the roads over the weekend before Christmas, so that's why they've chosen to come then. I guess my mom wants to be back in time for my brother's wrestling meet on Thursday, so that and darkness are the reasons why we're leaving early. At some point we have to head on down to Bloomington as well, because I guess I'm leaving the Anti-Christ in some old lady's driveway for the month that I'm back in Appleton. Didn't want to leave my car parked here in the streets in case there's a snow emergency, so apparently my mom's co-workers know lots of people in the area, including one guy's mom who lives in Bloomington. So, I get to have the fun of trying to find her place. I hate the fucking suburbs.

Well, that's not totally true. I have a pretty good idea, but sometimes time just flies by quicker than anyone can anticipate. They might actually have a chance!

Bayern's opponents in their upcoming DFB-Pokal match, third division VfL Osnabrück, might not be in for the drubbing that a healthy FCB should be capable of giving them. The current European Cup holders could be without the services of Oliver Kahn, Bixente Lizarazu, Sammy Kuffour, Giovane Elber, Claudio Pizzaro, Roque Santa Cruz, Hasan Salihamidzic, and Willy Sagnol for Wednesday's match. The one bright spot for the counter could be the return of Jens Jeremies, who has missed the last 6 months of competitions due to knee injury. He will likely start on the bench though, as Stefan Effenberg and Thorsten Fink are expected to get the start in the center of midfield. Looks like we might not get a nice rout after all!

As for Liverpool, they have been paired up with Birmingham City for their third round FA Cup match. The encounter will feature last year's two Worthington Cup finalists. Luckily Liverpool has been much luckier on the injury front this season, with almost everyone available for team selection in their upcoming matches. The one exception will be Didi Hamann, who is set to miss matches against Fulham, Chelsea, and Arsenal due to suspension following his sending off for a two-footed tackle in their 1-0 win over Sunderland. These next three Premiership matches could go a long way toward establishing any title hopes they might have for this season.

That means I'm going to have to come up with my entire presentation tonight and tomorrow. I'm also going to have to find a way to get to the library tomorrow. Need books. The short write-up, timeline, and bibliography aren't due until Friday, but I need the info for the presentation first. Maybe I'll work on it tonight, seeing as I'm sure it'll be more interesting than the Miami-Indy game will be.

I wish the Minnesota Police Benevolent Association would stop calling me every year looking for donations. I'd sooner blow all my money on drugs and hookers than give it to the fucking police. I don't have a clue what inspired me to sit up this late, but I just finished going through all the code for the Too Much Trivia in the Pants site and brought it up to standards. It not only validates as HTML 4.0 Transitional and CSS, I also tested it in all three browsers I have on my computer (IE 5.5, Netscape 6, and Opera 5) and it looked fine in all three. So even if this site looks like crap in browsers other than IE, atleast that one doesn't. It should load quickly and look the same in all three. Opera actually does some weird thing on me with some of the links, but it doesn't really effect the performance. It just hides the fact that some of the links I have look like plain text instead of links. They're not really important, but I'll get around to fixing that problem soon enough. As for now, I'm really going to go to bed. I have to go to class and work this afternoon, and I have a final (albeit and easy one) tonight. Nighty night!

I don't even know if you could call it procrastinating, as I just have this amazing ability to waste time. In my opinion, procrastinating is a conscious decision to waste time and put off responsibilities. I, on the hand, usually don't purposely put off my responsibilities. No, I just get caught up in doing about a dozen things which are much less important than what I should be doing, and then hours later it gets to be 3 am and say to myself, "Hey! Wasn't there something you were supposed to be doing? Oh shit! You were supposed to be working on that...." I've done it once again tonight. I started out by going back online after eating with the goal of doing some work on my presentation. I was at a minimum going to see what books I could dig up at the library and work on the timeline, but it's now a couple hours later, and I've done nothing of the sort. You'd think at some point time wasting would lose a bit of its appeal, but after twenty-one and a half years, I'm not bored with it yet. Hmm... is this what life has in store for me?

I guess I made it through the night. You know, my job is so tough and all. More people showed up at the 7:15 show than I had anticipated, but the change held out. I showed up to find half my change in the form of $20's, but I didn't really think anyone was going to come to see the movie, so I didn't bother running to the bank. I just lucked out that it held out. I picked up some milk at the SA on my way home, and now it's time to pretend I'm doing something. Listening to Big Band Jump, I think maybe I should do something productive like look over my crap for my final tomorrow night or do a little prep work for my presentation. How should I approach it? Should I do it like a survey of old time radio shows? Should I pick a particular radio show, such as "Amos & Andy," "The Goldbergs," "Fibber McGee & Molly," "Have Gun Will Travel," etc.? I don't know. I can do pretty much anything I want, but I have to fit it into 2 minutes. Ouch. I'll think of something. You haven't heard the last from me....

I made it over to the office, and I already got my photos scanned in. Actually, they're not photos that I took, but rather one's that Shelley took when she was here almost 3 years ago. I just thought they're really cool, so I wanted to make use of them. I won't get a chance to use Photoshop at all like I had wanted to, but maybe I can do that another time. I'm also thinking about bringing Photoshop and Illustrator home with me over break and loading them onto my parents' computer. It's a much better computer than mine anyway, and they have a scanner, so maybe I can get more work done then. At any rate, I should get back to the Bell here soon, and I don't know how safe my car is leaving it in the lot. I'm not worried about it getting broken into or stolen, but rather that it gets towed for being illegally parked. Later!

I'm going to work soon, and since I'll have time during the early show, I think I'm going to go over to the office and use the new iMac. It's hooked up to the scanner and has Photoshop and what not, so hopefully I can get some pictures scanned that I've meaning to for some time now. I'm not going to ramble here about the Vikings game, as I already did that here. Still wish I could have watched the Packer game instead, but atleast Minnesota wasn't boring this week.

I've spent the better part of the last 12 hours trying to figure out different things with JavaScript. I was really have a bitch of time figuring out how to do a countdown. Everything I could find only did days, but failed to take smaller amounts of time into account. If they did, they used ridiculously complicated scripts. In the end I pretty much figured it out for myself. I'm sure it was mostly wasted time, but it gave me a good idea of what I'm up against. As I spend more and more late night sessions like this, I'm sure you'll find more pointless script usage around here somewhere. I'm going to be home for a whole month with nothing to do very soon, so you can just imagine what kind of junk I'll throw together. As for now, I'm considering finally going to bed.

How far the mighty have fallen. Manchester United blew their third Premiership game on the trot, this time losing 1-0 to lowly West Ham at Old Trafford. You know, I wouldn't hate Manchester United so much if their dominance in the 90's wasn't so overstated. I mean, just like in the 90's when other than a few exceptions Man Utd dominated English football, Liverpool did the same through the 70's and 80's, but folk just cast them aside like Manchester United always has been, is, and always will be the best team in the world. That's why I hate ManU. On the other hand, Liverpool today stretched their league unbeaten streak to eleven games and their lead at the top of the table to six as they knocked off Middlesboro at Anfield 2-0. Owen scored his 99th goal for the club, and Berger added another just before the break.

As for my other fav team Bayern, they're self-destructing at the moment. While you can't be expected to win the league every season, they are currently holders of the European Cup. Their draw today with Wolfsburg dropped them six points behind leaders Leverkusen into fourth place. Admittedly, the top five teams in the Bundesliga are all really even this season, but with the money Bayern spends on players, you'd think they could bring in the needed players to stay atop. Anyway... enough soccer for today.

Damn it! I want to know why Fox29 isn't showing the Green Bay - Chicago game tomorrow. There must be some stupid deal in the NFL television contract, but I don't care. The Vikings game is on CBS, so they should be showing the other game (a lot more interesting game) on Fox. Grr....

Okay, so I sat up last night watching Snatch, and then I fell asleep afterward watching whatever the hell was on tv. I woke up in the middle of the night, turned the tv off, and fell back asleep. Now that I'm up (I've been up for almost 2 hours), I don't know why I don't make better use of my Saturdays. I typically leave the tv on most of the day even though there isn't shit on tv. People are home on Saturdays, so why don't the networks show anything worth watching on Saturdays? Do they just assume we're all ambitious and get out and do stuff? Pffft. Right. Nobody does anything on Saturdays. The day was invented to be lazy. I want to be lazy, damn it!

I managed to make my way out of my apartment for a short time tonight, as I drove to the gas station to top off my tank, and then I went over to Blockbuster to pick up a little entertainment. They had quite an assortment of previously viewed films for sale, so instead of renting anything, I bought Wonder Boys and Snatch. I got both for pretty cheap, so it was definitely worth it (the fact that one's a damn good film and the other's a pretty good film not withstanding). I was quite surprised when I was there to see how the ratio of DVDs to videos has changed; they were nearly 50-50. When I used to work at Family Video, we had a rather small DVD selection, and despite the fact that the trend was really just catching on, they weren't sure how big renting DVDs would be, as they were rather high maintenance (scratch easily, etc.). Apparently renting DVDs is pretty popular. Anyway, I came home and watched Wonder Boys, and now I'm just in a break before tossing in another movie - probably Snatch.

I wish there were a decent coffee shop nearby. I don't even know of a decent one in the cities. I'm not talking about one of these fancy-pants places that offers every coffee drink known to man. I'm talking about a place with booths and only two coffee drinks: regular and decaffeinated. I'm talking about a place where all kinds of people hang out at all hours and the waitresses keep the cups filled. I'm talking about a place where I can sit for hours doing whatever I want, and nobody is hawking over me telling me that I have a 2 hour limit and have to spend atleast $3.00 an hour. That's what I want. I'd sit there for hours drinking coffee, writing, and thinking. I'm sorry, but sometimes I just get in a mood to throw everything else aside and sit down to do some real writing. I was inspired to do so last night, but then I got caught up in other things. I got inspired again tonight after watching Wonder Boys, but once again I don't see that possibility arising. Alas... back to my television.

No plans to speak of at the moment, but that doesn't detract from the alure of a few days with no responsibilities. Actually, that's not entirely true, as I should get a jump on my presentation for next week. I have to do a 2 minute presentation on old time radio shows. The real difficulty will be in narrowing it down to 2 minutes. Maybe if I talk like John Moschitta I can fit everything into my allotted time. That's not for me to concern myself with right now. From an article in the New York Times, here's an interesting quote from Steve Jones, a researcher at Pew Internet and American Life Project:

"The pride came from finding the knowledge and from knowing how to use the device and not from the knowledge itself, compared to having pride in having the knowledge oneself. We don't have pride in our memory. We have pride in knowing how to access what is stored external to us."

I find it interesting because it seems to apply well to the direction that the annual WLFM trivia contest has gone. While knowledge before the internet became widely used for finding answers often came from books and databases of files, the real work came from personal knowledge. That personal knowledge has lost some necessity (although it still helps tremendously), as teams are able to quickly and easily find information on the internet. The world is changing, man.

I very recently returned home from the Lagoon, where I took in the latest Coen Brothers film The Man Who Wasn't There. Please bare with me while I ramble about the film without actually giving away the story.

At the moment, I'm at a loss to classify the film. I've heard it classified as film noir, but I have to respectfully decline that genre classification, as the film bares hardly any conventions of the genre. Well, other than using black and white film stock. An observation outside of serious discussion is that in the film, Billy Bob Thornton smokes. A lot. I don't think I've seen anyone spend so much screen time smoking since Johnny Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

Now getting down to business, the audience never identifies with a single character in the film, nor does it seem we are asked to. In fact, I'm having trouble identifying any sort of archetypal character in the film. In a way, Thornton's Ed Crane is a bit of an anti-hero, but he even fails that description, as it's not that he's really negative as much as he's "not there." I'm sorry, but that's crap I have stuck in my head from my sci-fi lecture from last night. Another interesting part of the sci-fi lecture that pops up in the film is Werner ("or maybe it's Fritz") Heisenberg's uncertainty principal. Strange.

For a the majority of the film, we never seem to be heading in a specific direction. As quickly as a suspenseful moment is thrown at us, the screenplay cuts through it. Sure, things happen, and there are consequences for these events, but until the end, none of these ever really appear to carry enough weight to be of conclusive importance. The only real mystery of the film is if and when comeuppance will ever come. I mean, he is only the barber. He does get himself into situations his whole life where he doesn't intend to be, but since he never says much, and his facial expressions belie the truth, he'll just continue taking whatever life gives him and won't complain about it.

How important is the truth if you're the only one who knows it, and they wouldn't believe you if you tried to tell the truth? Are you really lying if you never tell a lie, and when you tell the truth, nobody believes you? Which hurts others more - the real truth or the perceived truth? It's not that the film is this confusing, because it really is straight forward. No, it's just that thoughts after the film are not so easy to relay. Don't worry though, this is still a Coen Brothers movie, and as such you'll still find their brand of humor and Joel's mastery behind the camera that made him co-winner of the Best Director award this year at Cannes.

Thanks for baring with me as I ran this film through my head and straight to the keyboard without much editing. Like I said I would, I rambled on about the film without giving any of it away. That's all from me for now.

I survived the suburbs. I drove out to the Sears in Minnetonka and dropped my car off about 11. They said it would take about 2 hours, so I wandered around Ridgedale Center checking things out. Yep, it's a mall alright. I didn't like the layout of the mall, because instead of being round or straight, it had a center area and 4-5 spurs that stuck out with store leading down them and department stores at the ends. It was also 2 levels, and navigating between the levels was not as easy as it should be. Anyway, they got my money. I checked book stores and ate lunch. I went back to the auto center a little after 1, and they were working on my car then, so I had to wait a little longer. They finished it by 1:30, and now I'm home. So, the real good news is that I now have a new tire and not one that leaks anymore. They charged me for tire disposal also, even though I offered to take the old one out to the parking lot and set it ablaze. Now it's time to chill. Since I already had the ambition to leave my apartment once, I think I might make it twice and head to the Lagoon to catch the 5:00 show of The Man Who Wasn't There. I've been meaning to see it for about a month now, so I think I'll finally do that. Anyway, until later....

Well, I was looking forward to getting my tire changed today, but I'm not so excited anymore. My dad wants me to take it to Sears, so I whipped out my handy-dandy Yellow Pages and opened to "department stores." Unfortunately, Sears wasn't listed. What the fuck?! They weren't listed under "auto repair" either. Now getting slightly daunted, I decided to look under "tire," and there they had an ad for Sears Auto Center. Alright, we're back in business. My closest choice is the Sears in St. Paul a block away from the capital. Of course, that involves having to drive to downtown St. Paul, which I don't really want to do. My next closest option is the Ridgedale Center in Minnetonka, but that's way the fuck out there. Damn it - why can't we get any ugly, big box department stores in Minneapolis?! Why do I always have to drive out to the suburbs if I want to patronize the big corporations instead of the little guy? I don't know what time they open (there was no answer when I tried calling about 8:30), but I guess I'll end up driving out to Minnetonka. What the hell... I guess I can live through going out to the suburbs. It'll take all my willpower to keep from killing someone while driving down 394, but I'm sure I can manage.

I don't think callers to the Al Malmberg show tonight have been this vindictively hilarious since the shootings of the three Columbia Heights officers this summer. For those who don't know what I'm talking about, three police officers were shot and killed in Columbia Heights, MN (a suburb just north of Minneapolis) in July. The next night, callers to Al's show on WCCO would routinely call in with a comment such as "they should give them the death penalty!" As soon as Al would mention that Minnesota doesn't have capital punishment, they'd reply, "we should kill 'em anyway!" They'd rather non-challantly then change the subject by making a statement such as, "So what was the score of the game tonight?" (refering to the Twins game).

Translating this now to tonight, callers have been calling in about random things, and then Al would ask them their opinion on this man who was taken prisoner along with the others in that prison in Afghanistan and then proclaimed himself an American. Most of the callers, who had previously been very civil and subdued, will exlaim, "He's a traitor and we should string him up!" Al told one of them, "We can't do that because of the Geneva Convention," but the other guy replied, "Who cares? We should just take him out back and shoot him like we do with all the traitors." Minnesotans can be soooo entertaining.

Oh my god! Al and this guy are discussing the Carpenters right now. The guy says it's not okay for him to like the Carpenters because he's a guy. Al keeps forcing him to listen to more Carpenters songs so the guy will cave in. When Al asks him why so many guys owned Carpenters albums in the 70's, the guy says, "it's because all of their girlfriends bought them for them thinking they liked the Carpenters." God I love this show.

I'm usually annoyed by people who link articles from The Onion (as if nobody else bothers reading it every week), but I had to link this article as a reference. Toward the end of the article, there is mention of being mocked for not fitting in a combination desk-chair and it reminded me of third grade. In our classroom, we all had the combination desk-chairs, and it just reminded me of the one student in our class who was... errr... "big boned." Okay, fine, he was fat. Anyway, he made it a habit to lean back in his chair, and due to his girth, it placed undue stress on the stem and stand that held the chair up. The teacher was always warning him that "one day the chair will break off, and then [he]'ll have nothing to sit on, because [he] won't get a new desk." Well, one day in May, after 8 months of having him lean back in the chair, it finally broke off and he and the chair fell to the floor. Of course, I was sitting right next to him. Instead of being embarrassed, he found the situation rather comical, and he flopped around on the floor laughing hysterically for about 10 minutes. As the teacher had promised, they didn't get him a new desk, and at first he had to sit on the floor. Eventually they got him a separate chair to pull-up to the desk so he wouldn't have to sit on the floor. Okay, that seemed a lot like a Pathetic Geek Story, but I just had to bring it up. Ah, memories....

Actually, most of the questions were almost a little too easy, but that's a huge difference from the Trivial Pursuit Silver Screen Edition, where most of the questions are damn near impossible unless you're Robert Osbourne or Roger Ebert. Okay, I lied... I'm going to mention cars one more time. When my mom asked me for a wishlist for Christmas, #1 on my list was a new passenger side front tire so that I wouldn't have to refill the one that's on there every other day. Apparently it had a hole at one time, and instead of replacing it, my parents just had a patch put on it, but the patch still leaks. Well, my mom emailed me again today, and she said that she discussed with my dad and they'll pay me back for a new tire if I go to Sears and get it replaced. So, I'll probably go to Sears on Thursday and get it replaced. Of course, that requires me leaving my apartment for once on a Thursday, but I'll definitely be up for doing it for a good cause such as this.

I was going to stick around my class tonight until the break, but it was so boring and pointless that I left about a half hour into it instead. I stopped at Super Valu on the way home, and then I made dinner and ate before the MNF game. Of course, that's going to be my first topic of rambling for tonight.

We finally had an interesting MNF game. Granted the Packers seemed to have a little luck on their side tonight, but sometimes good teams need a little luck to win a game. In reality, they looked terrible in the first half, while the Jaguars for a time looked like they could do anything. Dan Fouts and Al Michaels several times refered to the second of the two pass interference calls that set up the first Packer touchdown as "dubious," but I have to disagree. Yes, it was pretty weak, but the defender grabbed Schroeder's arm while the ball was in the air, and by definition, that makes it pass interference. The second half was a completely different story. For once, Tom Rossley did some good play calling, and for the most part, the team did a good job of executing. Overall, it was just nice to see them dig in and win a tough one.

Now let me talk to you about cars. First of all, I wish they were doing all of these 0% interest deals next summer after I graduate so that I'd have time to work more and buy a car. I can't afford to buy one now, and they'll probably nix those deals by then. My car is dying on me, but it's running well enough that it'll last me through the winter, as long as I can afford to replace it next year. And then there are the commercials. I don't even remember what car the commercial is for, because I see it once a week during the MNF game, but I think it's Nissan that is running the commercial with Blur's "The Universal." It's quite surprising to hear them using that song, but at the same time, it's refreshing to have a company use a Blur song other than "Song 2." As for another commercial, I'm disappointed that Chrysler has changed their current commercial for the Concorde. It used to be funny when the girl was grossed out by figuring out what her mom was implying. When they changed it so that the mom says, "Concorde, New Hampshire silly!" (or whatever she says), the whole commercial loses its effect and just becomes like any other lame, old car commercial.

Okay, that's enough for me tonight. Well, at least that's enough for me on cars and football.

Despite beginning to doze off on the couch shortly before I needed to leave for work, I managed to make it through the night. I spent most of the first movie up in the booth watching the Seattle-San Diego game with the projectionist. After getting the second movie started, I packed up my things and came home. For the second time in a week, we had our key to the projection booth stolen, so I don't know what we're going to do now. I wish I could just get my own key that I don't need to leave in the hiding place, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Pffft.

Since I came home, I've been online trying to find information on Tiny Hill, but there just isn't anything decent online. I found one brief band bio, but otherwise, there isn't much to be found in the way of his discography. So, I gave up and started trying to find into on WRJQ. I was surprised to find out that they were sold back in October to Woodward, the same people who own WAPL and WHBY. Not being home, I don't know if they've changed anything about the station, but I hope not. More important to me right now is getting some sleep, because I'm just worn out. Zzzzzzz....

I'm back and I'm tired. I originally dozed off at some point while Annemarie was still here, woke up as she was leaving, and fell right back asleep. I woke up again at 11, but didn't even bother trying to fall back asleep. I think I was just worn out from all the monster truck action last night. Rar!

We didn't arrive at the Metrodome until almost 8, because we were busy getting amped up for the event by listening to Asphyxiation, but it didn't matter, as the event didn't start until around 8. The pro stadium trucks lack the excitement of the monster trucks, but the monster trucks were awesome. The racing of the trucks was exciting enough, but the show really got great when they turned to the freestyle session. You know... smashing cars, trucks, trees, barriers, and everything else that got in their way. As they took their turns, the edges on the smashed cars got sharper, and that caused plenty of ruined tires, which caused most of the latter trucks to retire before their 90 seconds were up. The one exception was Grave Digger, who blew out a tire and kept going anyway, which really got the crowd fired up. After the freestyling monster trucks came the demolition derby. I can't understand why so many people left before the demolition derby, because how can you pass up smashing cars, smoke, and fire. Rar!

The crowd were an interesting mix as well. For one, I was blown away and completely confused in seeing the number of frat boy/ sorority girl types in attendance. Most of them weren't really watching - in fact, they spent large amounts of time wandering around - so why they were there was strange. Annemarie thinks it was for the beer. Sitting behind us were the too-punk high school kids. You know the type - once again, not interested in the proceedings, but plenty interested in chain smoking in the dome. I enjoyed going home with my clothes covered with ashes from their irresponsible smoking. And then there was the crowd you'd expect at a monster truck rally: beer-chugging, Polaris-jacket-and-tight-jeans-wearing, mullet-sporting folk. These were our people. They're the one's who made it a family affair. At the same time, there were some interesting one's among them, including the young man sitting about 3 rows in front of us. He cheered on every underdog in the races, got people booing at him, and yet he'd be the first one to pop up and high-five everyone whether his truck won or not. I wish I could go to the next one, especially since it's going to have Truckasaurus, but unfortunately I'll be home, having just gotten my wisdom teeth out. Damn.

Okay, I'm actually only on because I'm killing time while my food is cooking, and the television programming is so bad today that I actually turned the tv off. I talked to Annemarie for a while, and we made some plans for the big event tonight. I also got a start on cleaning up this dump. I atleast recycled all the newspapers and aluminum cans lying around, and I put all my cd's away. Maybe next I'll work on the piles of clothes and junkmail. My mom commented last Sunday on how I haven't dusted in a while either. She's right. Maybe I'll get around to doing that soon too. Maybe maybe maybe. After wasting away the last 5 hours online, I guess it's time for me to sign off and actually do something. Admittedly, I wasn't on this long just to waste time (although that would be a big reason). I was actually waiting for today's round of Premiership matches to get over, so I could see where Liverpool would stand. Owing to a goal by Owen in the 6th minute, and penalty save by Dudek late in the second half, they managed to sneak by Derby 1-0. Some (including the match reporter for Sky) will say this is proof that Liverpool won't miss Fowler, but I can't agree with that, seeing as he got so little playing time as it was. Nevertheless, a win is a win, and it keeps them at the top, three points clear of Arsenal with a game in hand, and five points clear of Leeds, who play Fulham later. La-ti-da... I know my readers, and none of you care about this but me.

Molly recently started posting this new journal called The Secret Life of Molly. Basically, she draws little cartoons/pictures about things that happen to her or she experiences, and then she posts them. Rather entertaining, you need to check it out.

Reading through an article about downtown restaurants in the recently revamped online version of The Post-Crescent, I came across this rather insightful quote from Big Belly's Pit and Porterhouse owner Toby Rueckl about how he came up with the name for his restaurant: "I thought to myself, who eats ribs and drinks beer? Stereotypically, guys with big bellies." Genius. This guy needs to get out of the restaurant business and become an anthropologist.

With this newest redesign, I've finally given up on the clichéd counter. I can still find even more interesting information anyway, since my host offers tracking information. Reading through the info, I find that people came to my page after searching some interesting words. 362 page requests came from people searching for "booty." 371 people were in search of "pants," while 79 people were seeking out the "abdominizer." In fact, the top 5 search words (not in this order), spell out "Too Much Booty in the Pants." Go figure. There are still plenty more who showed up looking for Beansnappers, Doris Day, 1977 Ford Grenada, the Minneapolis Russian Mafia, George Webb, pictures of an Oldsmobile Firenza, Minnoqua, Liz Phair, and The Boss' Cottage. Some people get visitors looking for porn fetishes, but not I. It's like I'm rated G.

I was kind of slow on my news yesterday, but the World Cup draw is done. There are easier groups, but the United States isn't in too terrible of a group, being placed in Group D, along with Poland, Portugal, and co-hosts South Korea. What'll make the biggest difference is how many injuries they have, and which team shows up - the confident team that strode through the qualifiers, or the demoralised team that got crushed in France in '98. I suspect the former, but stranger things have happened. And at least we didn't get stuck in Group F, which is, sans argument, easily the most difficult group. Having gotten my news from Sky, of course they're going to sound all confident, but England don't have a great track record against Sweden, the Argentines are just crushing everyone, and Nigeria is hardly a pushover. On the other hand, if I had to pick a weakest group, it would be Group H. Japan has a few good players and have impressed recently, but most of their games have been against foreign B-sides, I don't know how the Belgians squeezed by the Czechs, but stranger things have happened, and Russian and Tunisia aren't fooling anyone - they're along for the ride. Okay, now I need to go check up on today's Premiership matches....

Oh boy oh boy - December's here! Although I hate snow emergencies, I love snow, and hopefully we'll start getting plenty of it now. Woohoo!!

As I thought I would, I ended up falling asleep in front of the tv. I watched Sound of Music on Fox, and then I popped in my tape of Meet Me in St. Louis, and during that is when I fell asleep. It was still fairly early, which is the reason why I'm up plenty early this morning. I really think my goal for today (other than the excitement of the monster truck rally) should be to clean up this dump. Looking around my apartment, it really has the look of both midterms/finals and of a guy who hasn't left his apartment in like 3 days (which is getting to be true). Actually, I did run to the store yesterday, but I wasn't gone for more than about 10 minutes, so that hardly counts. I didn't feel like dirtying another pair of clothes for 10 minutes, so I just put my clothes from Wednesday back on (since that's the last time I got dressed).

It just occured to me of how little substance my posts have been lately also. They've mostly been autobiographical stories about what I've been upto lately. No opinions; nothing. How about a dream for ya? Okay, so last night I had this dream...

"I kept going back to the movie theatre every night. The rooms were all small and of weird angles. In fact, each individual theatre was more like a tiny classroom, some with folding chairs and the like. I kept running into this guy I've known since elementary school there, who apparently worked there in my dream. He probably never would have popped up in my dream, except I saw him in a bar the day after Thanksgiving, and it was probably the first time I'd seen him since high school. Anyway, I had had a lot to drink one day at the movies, and I really had to use the facilities. Okay, for those of you worried about it, yes, this is going to become another of my dreams that takes place in a bathroom, so beware. Anyway, walking in, opposite the entrance door was a row of sinks, followed down the wall to the right with a row of urinals. On the opposite wall from the urinals was a row of stalls. I walked up to one of the first urinals, set my bag down, and was about to commence urination, when I noticed the doorless entryway to my right. I walked over to it and noticed a labyrinth connecting dozens of rooms with urinals on every wall. Wandering through a few, I came across another doorway, but this one was to a large central room, which I had to step down stairs into. The room was larger than a basketball court, but hexagonal in shape, and there were rings of urinals. Each ring stretched the full circumference, but there were six sets of stairs (one for each side) that proceeded down to the next level, which was another ring of urinals. There were no walls or dividers, just free-standing urinals. There were about 4 of these levels, and then a main central ring. For a man desperate to release the results of a full day of soft drink consumption, I was like a kid in a candy store. But which one to use? Being all alone in this dimly-lit monument to ceramics, I started using one of the central one's, but then decided to pinch it off and try using every one in the central ring before I was done. Just as I was finishing, I looked up and noticed a man in a tuxedo (not a good one, but one of those tacky one's that movie theatre employees wear) standing at the top of one of the sets of stairs and holding my bag. He asked me if it was mine, and I acknowledged it. He then told me I shouldn't leave it just lying around like that, because he found a kid digging through it and playing with 'that plastic thing.' Completely confused, I inquired with him just what this plastic thing is, but he only told me, 'You know, that plastic thing. You just shouldn't leave this thing lying around, or the kids are going to get into it.' I walked up the stairs, took my bag from him, and walked out. That's when I woke up."

There, is everyone happy to read about another one of my dreams? Well, you should be damn it. I'm going to go do something else now.
